Locals where would you recommend for us to stay overnight if only wanting a short drive after a sunset photography session at
the Pinnacles? Things have changed so much since last there... Think
Sandy Cape too far at night for a swag setup. Can't really sneak in an "illegal"
camp at Wedge with
signage on the 4by....Contemplating options but not really setup to
camp in a CP.

I had to look up which
Pinnacles you were referring to, Michelle. I was going to recommend
Talbotville (
Vic High Country), just a quick jaunt down Billy Goats
Bluff track :-) Hardly a quick jaunt from
Lancelin. LOL
Cheers

Places. Does anyone know much about this spot?I might have to check that out.

Waddi Farm itself during the day has absolute swarms of insects, sort of like flies but ten times more interested in getting into your eyes/nose/mouth/... Whether the resort is immune I don't know.

Push come to shove there is a yha/backpacker in
cervantes
Considering all the "restrictions in place" its probably best option apart from staying at CP -unless your happy to simply sleep in swag under a awning or collapsible shelter (oztrail type thing)
And price wise when you compare a CP vs backpackers there basically the same price

Hi Michelle, the nearest 'legal' is the 72 hour
camping at Tuarts Reserve, about eight or nine kilometres from the Indian Ocean Drive, heading north east along
Cervantes Road.

All free campsites (Shire of Dandaragan) are for fully self-contained campers only. All campers must carry a minimum of 20 litres of fresh
water, have a waste (
grey)
water holding
tank capacity and have a portable
toilet cassette with holding capacity. All waste must be retained by the camper and disposed of off-site in appropriate facilities.

However Rowdy, unlike many other "self contained only campgrounds" in the east which specify motorhomes and caravans only no campers, Dandaragan specifies campers. It is not difficult to leave no waste even when swag
camping for the night.

You might find this info helpful from the local council
https://www.dandaragan.wa.gov.au/camping-information.aspx
I stayed at Hakea reserve (-30.460308, 115.332180) a decade or so ago ... was a bit off the road and there were a couple of shelters with tables ... but otherwise just somewhere to
park up for the night before tackling the drive back to
Perth.
From google maps Tuarts Reserve (-30.420541, 115.136726) looks like a better option.
