Hey bud. If you a little underwhelmed over the lack of response, try putting some Year 4 English into play, such as punctuation, spelling and some sort of sentence together that won't leave the rest of us trying to google translate your query. Or otherwise try calling a couple of roadhouses up at he Cape and ask them.
If you can't afford block ice that some poor bastard in a truck has had to drag up there, then you can't afford to travel ie think of if you unfortunately break down. 2 litres of fuel up there will cover your block ice costs for a couple of days.

Thats a pretty dog response, really.

Firstly, the person answering the question may not have substantial computer experience. The internet is a funny thing... you never know who's on the other end or what life experiences they bring to the table. He might be the kind of bloke who might now know much about block Ice or Cape York, or typing on a keyboard but he might be the kind of bloke that might rescue you out of a bog or repair your broken down vehicle.

Pretty dissapointing to see on this forum. There's a few smug characters out there, moderators might want to clip they're wings.

I'm in line with Top End Az.

It's a sad time when educators, whom don't have sufficient grammar skills themselves, are then responsible for teaching our kids.

It's now common "practice" that spelling and grammar skills are not given the merit they deserve and it has nothing to do with computer skills.
To know when to use 'know' instead of 'no', is a basic English language skill and has little to do with spelling.
English teachers should be teaching basic and solid skills and not be drawn into the laziness of phonetic spelling and general bastardisation of our language.

The American form of English is a prime example of language bastardization.

You guys are missing the point.
People don't come to this site to get an education on the correct use of the English language.
I am sure there is forum elsewhere where you can wank off and demonstrate your superior use of the English language and belittle the plebs of society ?

Any wonder this forum is a ghost of its former self and earnt the reputation as the grumpy old farts site with the knit picking and berating that goes on by some.
All of the dribble is driving people away.

My mother taught me to spell, not a school teacher. I developed the skill of learning before then. Some just refuse to learn or try and better themselves. No one is perfect but we can try. Pointing it out to some is essential to alert them to the issue, if they choose to ignore it then they miss out in many ways.

In some posts on other forums it is very difficult to decipher what is being asked or stated. Some posts and replies don't even make sense.
In technical issues a wrong word can change the whole meaning.

Any person that is doing extended touring, a car fridge is an absolute must, and now you are going to tell me that your van only uses an esky and you buy block ice every few days......

Come into the real world, useing an esky is old hat and having to rely on ice in the remoter parts of the tropics shows how prepared some people are.

I can see where you are coming from Stephen et al but you do need to consider that some people may not do a lot of camping. As was pointed out it is not cheap to set up a reliably power system to run a fridge. If you are going to camp for a few weeks a year you would buy a lot of ice for just the cost of a fridge let alone batteries panels etc. Eskies still have a place in the world perhaps just not in your world.

We camped for many years before buying a portable fridge, mostly because they did not exist.
Nice to have, but not essential. You do what you can with what you have and fridge or not is no different in that regard.
I do recall in the early 70s taking a full size kero fridge on a trailer to a remote beach where we camped and fished for 3 weeks with 2 small kids. It did make a significant difference to how we lived.

Hi Terry

Trust me, I started off camping well over 40 years ago when the only way was an esky and ice and it was a real pain keeping up with ice in the warmer parts of Australia.

Today you can buy a good quality, true camping fridge like the MR40 Engel for under $900 including a genuine transit bag, compared to a smart phone that most people have that are well over $1000

And yes we still use an esky when going out to keep drinks cold say from the car. Even if I was only going away for a few weeks every year camping, a car fridge is a must and you will find that those that say they are not have never used one and do not know just how great they are and what they are missing.

In the end it will come down to priorities and how comfortable you want to be when camping and how reliant you want to be on getting ice in remote places. A good example is where can you buy ice in the Simpson Desert, Anne Beadell Highway and the like.........you will be having hot drinks, meat and milk that has gone off.

No Stephen.
The meat is tinned or dried and the milk is powdered or UHT and the drinks are wrapped in damp towels and kept in a cool place.
People without Engels or eskies don't need to die or even suffer.

The original poster never said he didn't have a fridge - for all we know he may well have 2 - he also didn't say he was going extended touring ! Maybe he's going up there fishing and the 4 foot plus fish he expects to catch won't fit in his fridge but will fit in his large ice box where he needs to keep them chilled with block ice !

Just a thought

Hi alloy c/t

The MR40 is the 38 litre model...Eclipse.

They are not the full metal model, but still rum the original and reliable compressor system that is in the other model Engel's, and as they say, it is a plane Jane and does not have all the bells and whistles as the new digital models.

Hi Gazz

That's the point, the ordinal question was very vague and that is why I first said what I said, but yes he may have a fridge.

Around an hour ago it topped 43.9 and was waiting for it to go to 44, but it stared to drop down to 43.3......ha ha

The wind is all over the place, sometimes no wind and then up it springs. Just pray that we do not get any fires.

Our thoughts are with the people of Murray Bridge and we hope the meat works gets up and going as quick as possible.

Is that the same meat works that Bob Rowe owned?

Cheers and keep cool

G'day Stephan

Cool change has arrived here ( 30 now ) with the wind changing from the north and now coming from the south.

Don't know a lot about the meat works as I've only been in the Bridge 3.5 years but it's was purchased by the Thomas family in 1999 when it was going broke and the father and son have built it up to what it is today - or should I say what it was on Wednesday ?? It's just out of the Bridge on the Mannum Road.

The meat works goes 24/7 and the fire will have a huge financial impact on a lot of people - mainly the families where the husband does the day shift and the wife does the night shift or vice versa.

TFI employs 1400 people there which is a fair percentage of the 21,000 population of Murray Bridge.

Cheers

Hey John

I'd give Bamaga Roadhouse a call... Id be surprised if they didn't sell it.
If your passing into Weipa, no doubt there will be some there.

Depending on how long your stay is in the Cape, you could certainly stock up at Mareeba/Lakeland/Cooktown and if your only up there for a week you could chance it. I've kept 100/120L Evakool esky's with 2 or 3 big block ice for 7 days easy at places around the Cape. Very handy for breaking up into smaller esky's or boat trips up creeks, esky's on quad bikes etc. Just drain the water regularly and keep it in good shade. The quality of the esky is probably the deciding factor!

Whilst my reply may seem harsh, it wasn't a personal attack. I stand by it as I believe in a bit of forum etiquette in spelling and punctuation. You don't need to be a Rhodes scholar to do this. We all make typos, and come undone with Autocorrect at times.
Not everyone can afford a car fridge. Although we now have a 40l Engel, dual battery etc we lived with a mid size Troppo Box esky for years and in Darwin we could keep block ice for 2-3 days no problems, if you kept it out of the sun and didn't open it every 5 minutes. At times we also made a slurry using salt.
But, if you are heading to the Cape, then asking if ice is available is a valid query if you don't have a fridge. Googling a few roadhouses and giving them a call will give you your most accurate answer, cost shouldn't matter in the overall scheme of things. It will be negligible compared to fuel, accommodation, food, barge crossings etc etc etc. Hope this helps.

Regardless of what you think Az, you ripped right up the OP's arse in a most derogatory manner.

If you want to see some examples of bastardisation of the King's/Queen's English, then maybe you should peruse some of the Landcruiser/Camping pages, for nonexistent punctuation & mysterious spelling.

Most people who have limited English, indicate that by announcing they are from overseas or new to the counrty etc. Therefore most of us presume, because schooling is compulsory in Australia, the vast majority of "Orstrayans" have a reasonable grasp of English and the written word after leaving the schooling system.
Not unreasonable for someone to ask for better than was posted, as it was about as basic you can get without totally losing the intent of the communucation.

Things I have learnt from this thread (aswell as another)....
#1- when using the phrase "Hey bud" instead of the users name, you can say what you like because it no longer becomes personal
#2 - make sure you have all your spelling and punctuation correct in your posts, or the grammar Nazis will come after you (I'm sure they will mark my reply accordingly)
#3 - teachers today aren't there to teach
#4 - pointing out other peoples faults is essential
#5 - when visiting Cape York (which is where the OP stated they are going) you can no longer go camping without a fridge in your vehicle, it is essential.
#6 - somewhere in the drivel if you look hard enough, it was mentioned that block ice is available at Bamaga and Seisa....just don't buy it from anyone that is wearing thongs and has tattoos on them, that ice will likely make your vehicle rust out.

Just an idea but was thinking that to save those grammar Nazis all the trouble of having to mark each post made on the forum, members should be made to sit and pass an English test before being eligible to contribute to the forum

There is no need to stop them from reading what the Rhodes scholars have to say as the poor illiterate buggers who can’t spell probably can’t read anyway
Of course a declaration would also need to be made and witnessed by a JP that they are tattoo free, do not wear thongs and also provide a roadworthy certificate for their vehicle confirming it is rust free

That will keep the riff raff out !

Would definitely save time and energy if all members were made to..
1. Hold a degree in English grammar.
2. Own at least one 12 volt fridge.
3. Remain aloof and arrogant at all times and treat every question as trivial.
4. Take every comment as a personal attack upon themselves.
5. Listen to no-ones opinion but their own.
By enforcing the above rules I am sure the forum will flourish and keep out annoying newbies and peasants alike whom seem to take great delight in asking questions.....The cheek of them!!!

A few worked up souls on this great forum. So let's go through a couple of things; if you find a spelling mistake then that's great, but sorry, I'm all out of gold star stickers at the moment.

If my original post was so offensive I'm sure it would have been pulled. But Trump hasn't pressed his big button yet, and stock market held so all good. If some here read my other post you'll see that my view (only my view, not gospel) that some sort of coherence is respectful to other forum folks.

If the term "Hey bud" is offensive then so be it. If you are offended, nothing actually happens to you, you are just offended. Good for you. In our family we call each other Bud all the time, then every name under the sun at other times. Some people are offended with eradicating Cane Toads because it's mean, so you can't please everyone. By the way, If you aren't into being offensive, and your purpose in life is political correctness I hear the Commonwealth Games are hiring at the moment.

English: the number of job applications I get at work from people whom are battling to get their name right, let alone having any level of written English is astonishing, yet feel entitled to the $80k job. I have been fortunate enough to have a few gigs overseas for 12 months + at a time in a number of countries and had to learn verbal and written communication in the native language and it's bloody hard work, but if you make the effort.....

Last; in both my posts, whilst being honest with my views on posting with some level of grammatical English for the benefit of fellow forum users, I have offered suggestions to the OP query on block ice. This is contrary to other replies whom have offered a spray of their views on my comment without providing anything close to an answer to the OP. I don't think the mods or any of us want this, and if you are feeling angry, alas, help is available.

Now, time for that Commonwealth Games Volunteers application and I hope the OP has made a few phone calls about his ice. Not everyone is in the position to buy a fridge, but if you are worried about a dollar or 2 on a big trip then should you be considering such a trip.

Happy days mate. How about contributing to the OP instead of trolling.

Your helpful hint for the OP. "try ringing a couple of roadhouses on the cape"
The rest was abuse.
Pretty helpful (not)

Hi John...

You should have little problem getting ice and the following are listed as having it…

Musgrave Roadhouse
Cape York Ice & Tackle Bamaga
Cape York Camping Punsand Bay
Weipa Caravan Park Weipa

There is also Bramwell Station and I’d be surprised if they don’t have ice also.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers, Baz – The Landy

Of course the real problem is where do you buy the Scotch to pour over it.
Dave.
