I'm up for a new sat nav. Previous one was Navman 7'' screen. It was ok but after something better for the up and coming Kimberleys and Kakadu trip.
Please do not recommend Hema HX-1, I had purchased it 1 week ago and I'm taking back for a refund....................its terrible.
Thanks,
Steve

A set of 1:25K maps a compass and basic understanding of tirgnontry and 3 point in diustanec always locates me if I'm out bush and slightly geographically confused

There is a truckies navman/tomtom around which maye have further info that a normal get lost device gives you.

One thing I do suggest get somethign that has lifetime map upgrades, no point ebign told I need to pay $xx a year.

Then have a email saying as many older units don't have sufficent memeory we no longer providing updates for this unit -tom tom did that to me recently, and sadly unless i did pay for map updates it wouldn't work out bush on a major highway

If you were dropped off in the middle of Australia with a map and compass I think it would be very hard to get a triangulation even for an experienced person with navigational skills .Where a the land marks ? Why wouldn't you want to use a gps navigator, so much easier. Your co ords will be on the screen. Then use 'Go To' We all carry paper maps, 'mad if you don't'. As for a reply to the original question. Buy or use your existing Android tablet or ios device and install a choice of apps like ExplorOz Traveller, Hema Explorer, Hema 4wd maps, Memory Maps, Mudmaps. These apps will preform as equal or better that the HX1 . You can also add a street navigator to them from there store.

Lifetime free map upgrades is only for the "life" of the unit as determined by the maker. Maybe 3 years if you're lucky. I second the tablet idea. I have the Exploroz traveller with premium maps, Wikicamps, Memory Map with the EO maps and Co Pilot on mine. Works a treat

Are you still getting free map upgrades. My point was irrespective of the unit continuing to work or not you only get free maps for the period the manufacturers consider the reasonable life of the unit. Garmins may be an exception but it certainly applied to my navman (years ago)

Yep, I get a reminder every 3 months that new map updates are available. I then open garmin express and my garmin and download them straight to the gps. I don't log on it just recognises the gps.

Hi Terry

My Gamnin Nuvi is at least 5 years old and there are regular map updated.

Just three days ago, I did a map update that took 15 minutes to install.

As low Ng as your Garmin was registered at the time of purchase and is a LTM unit, the free maps are available for the life of the unit.

Cheers

Stephen

Yep agree with the others who own Garmin. I've a Nuvi 2797 4 years and get the updated regularly. I have noticed the detail on there City Navigator Map areas(outside the city that is) are constantly improving. Anyone else noticed that?
I also have Shonky Topo Maps on it and all good. It would be nice if the Expolor Oz maps could be downloaded to it
