Somewhere safe to leave a car/camper in Alice Springs for a week?

I'm trying to organise our trip to the centre in July. I'm thinking of driving up from Sydney by myself (or with a friend), flying back, leaving the car & tvan somewhere in Alice Springs then flying back with the family.

I can do the flights using Frequent Flyer points so they are cheap. Coming back for a week makes things easier for my business - better to be away for 1 week, back for a week then away for 2 weeks than 3 weeks straight.

But... I'm not sure where to leave the car! Would it be safe in the Alice Springs Airport carpark? Is there secure parking anywhere else that people could recommend?

Peter, I've called into Alice Springs Airport after 6:00PM in the afternoon, and you'd think the place is a morgue.
It is utterly and totally deserted, with not a soul around.

It's a hive of activity during aircraft arrival and departure times, but at other times, all the employees just lock the terminal up, and bolt for home or the pub.
The terminal basically only operates during daylight hours, approximately 7:00AM to about 5:30PM.

It would be the last place I would leave a vehicle in Alice Springs. I reckon you'd risk finding it trashed and burnt, after the first couple of nights unattended.

In addition, the Airport Long Term Car Parking area restrictions, state no trailers, caravans or campers, or any vehicle higher than 2.3M can be parked in that area.

Vehicles with caravans, campers or trailers are obliged to utilise a part of the Short Term Parking area, set aside for that purpose - at $22 a day!

You need a secure, locked, chain mesh-enclosed compound, or preferably a shed, with a caretaker on duty at all times, or comprehensive video/camera coverage.

I would suggest calling one of the self-storage facilities in Alice Springs and asking what they have available.

Cheers, Ron.

Or phone the Alice Springs cops and see if they have a suggestion.

Id be half inclined to ring a truck transport depot and throw a slab or two their way for storage of vehicle and trailer.
In the industrial estate it doesnt cop much villain traffic or locals with light fingers..

Taxi fare will be slightly dear but its not really too far out of town

Pete. give the Transport Hall of fame a ring on (08) 8952 7161. They maybe able to accommodate you and park your gear next to one of the volunteers vans. Gates are locked at night with volunteers on site, plus it is far enough out of town to keep the riff raff away.

They are always looking for some extra bucks to keep the exhibits up to scratch.

With reports of Hall of Fame needing to move due to long term vandalism, maybe not.

Thanks for that MH, didn't realise they were having problems.

It must be pretty serious if they are looking at relocating to another town.

They were Eagle, with one article saying Broken Hill was being considered. Vandalism was blamed as making in untenable to stay there. Now the long term manager Liz had left. I'm pretty sure at least one of the media articles has been posted here.

The good news is, as of 20 February, the Transport Hall of Fame is staying in Alice Springs.

There are a number of self storage shed in Alice Springs. If you can find a vacancy in one of these for the times you need, this would be the safest.

Thanks everyone. I'll ring around some caravan parks and see if they can store it for me. You guys have been a great help! I've got the flights sorted now have the fun part of working out which way to drive there (not sure if I can get enough time off to go via the Simpson) and where to go while we're there.

Try McDonald Ranges Big 4 Caravan Park. They have a storage area. We left a vehicle and camper trailer there for three weeks. No problems and a reasonable rate.

Yes, we also left our vehicle and campertrailer there for about a week as we had to fly back to Sydney. Rates are reasonable and the place is secure. It is an excellent caravan park but it does get extremely busy.
