In today's
Sydney Morning Herald there was a one-liner saying that in the up-coming State budget there would be a 40% reduction in rego costs for caravans. In NSW, rego consists of a small rego fee and a large weight tax.
Curious as to whether the reduction applied to the small rego fee or the large tax, or both, I contacted my local MP and was sent the Minister's press release (below). Without going into detail, I thought it was ambiguous and not very clear, so I made further enquiries.
The 40% reduction is to the tax and is available to all owners of light (ie up to 4.5 tonne) towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers registered for private use.
If you're an eligible pensioner you will continue to get one free registration, say for your motor vehicle, PLUS, if you have a van or CT, you will get the 40% reduction in tax on the van or CT.

There is a Q&A on the RMS site on the subject.

its the usual smoke and mirrors, election soon so they are trying to appeal to everyone for re election. The savings will be minimal no doubt. Michael

Couldn't agree more, Michael, they're trying to buy votes.
It will save me about $100, not insignificant but still leaves NSW rego for vans of my size way up there.
And it applies from 1st Nov. Guess when my rego is due..... 29 Oct :-(.
Cheapest option for me is 3 month renewal on 29 Oct, then 12 monthly.

Yep!
Election coming up, so some of the education and health positions that were axed just after last election are due to be "reinstated" - that is, of course, if you believe the hype!
Cynical? Who, me? Nah ... I prefer realist!
