Anyone know if permits are required for this route or not.
I can't find any mentions anywhere.
And what about that section of the Old Eyre Highway?
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter
Are you talking about the track south from
Watson down to
Nullarbor Roadhouse?
If that is the track you are talking about, it is not on Aboriginal Land.
Cheers
Stephen

No Stephen. The desired route is from
Watson going SW via
Disappointment cave (in the Regional Reserve) to the Old Eyre Highway which is mostly in
Yalata land.

Peter

Hi Peter
When we have driven it, we were told that below the Trans Line is Crown Land and no permits required.
It's a slow easy drive and just take your time over the larger
limestone rocks.

We won't be going along the Trans line at all. We will be coming into
Watson from the north east and continuing south west across the Nullarbor Regional Reserve.
The question only relates to the
Yalata Land at the southern end, before the Eyre Highway.

Peter

Hi, Peter,
From my searches all I could find was the
Yalata Site saying that Permits were required for access on the Southern side of the highway ie to the beaches/fishing spots. It may pay to call
Yalata direct. I would be interested to know the answer as I will be doing this in a few weeks. Vesting of the land rights to
Yalata occurred in 2014 or thereabouts I believe.

Hi Peter, Stephen
Good to catch up again. Just doing my own research as looking to do same in a 3-4 weeks time. We will have a couple of dogs and was looking at NP's - not a lot of definitive info about on that issue (believe a transit permit can be obtained) . The road from Disappointment caves branches 2 ways both end onto the Old Hwy. That bit (Nth of the new Hwy) is on
Yalata Land. Looked at
Yalata and permits seemingly only required to enter lands to south of the Eyre Hwy. Entry to
Head of Bight facility for whale watching is
rock up to
Visitor Centre and pay the entry fee.
Regards
Pete G

Has no one else here ever driven this road?
Sounds like a good reason to go :)
We now have a transit permit from
Yalata.

Peter

Thanks Stephen. I clearly misread your post :(
The area immediately south of
Watson is Regional Reserve and below that (both sides of the highway) is
Yalata Aboriginal land.
The route we propose meets the Eyre Highway 40km east of Nullarbor RH.
Did you stop at
Disappointment Cave? I was there (and at the 3 Diprose Caves a bit further north) in 1954 when I was a kid, but don't recall any details of them.
Cheers,
Peter
