I have gone to
Townsville several times by going via Moree,
Miles,
Emerald , Charters Towers. It is also convenient to get to the PDR via
Mareeba.
This is 2 lane bitumen up to
Emerald and was 1 lane bitumen up to Charters Towers, but maybe 2 lane by now.

I have just completed a trip that included Mt Garnet, The Lynd,
Hughenden,
Muttaburra,
Aramac.
Fair bit of dirt along that route.
Hughenden to
Muttaburra often less than 40 km/hr, particularly on the the little bitumen patches around creeks etc. The Lynd to
Hughenden was mostly an OK dirt road, but with some slow sections too.
I wouldn't be put off if it was on your list of "Roads I want to drive", but if the name of the game is to get somewhere in a hurry, take the long route.
