Following the recent disastrous fires in this area, many roads are closed and will remain so, some for quite a long time. The following is an extract from the NPWS site:
The following key roads in
Kosciuszko National Park remain closed:
Alpine Way area:
Olsens Lookout Road
Geehi Dam Road
Geehi Walls trail
Major Clews trail
Grassy Flats trail
Murray Gates trail
Bicentennial trail
Cabramurra area:
Link Road from
Snowy Mountains Highway to Goat Ridge Road
Tooma Road - KNP5 (
Khancoban to
Cabramurra Road) - expected reopening December 2020
Goats Ridge Road
Elliot Way - expected reopening May 2021
Kings Cross Road
Snowy Mountains Highway area:
Tantangara Road
Long Plain Road
Yarrangobilly Caves Road
Goobragandra Power Line Road
These roads and trails will remain closed until hazardous trees are treated,
debris is removed and repair work is completed.
The following roads in
Kosciuszko National Park are open:
Snowy Mountains Highway - visitors must stay within the road corridor and be aware of hazards such as damaged buildings and burnt trees
Alpine Way - visitors should visit Live Traffic NSW to confirm status before travel
Kosciuszko Road -
Jindabyne to
Charlotte Pass
Guthega Road - Kosciuszko Road to Guthega Village
Barry Way - open to the Victorian border
Of particular note is the Elliot Way (Closed until May 2021) and the Tooma Road (closed until December 2020). The Alpine way is open but is subject to closures especially following heavy rains, when rockfalls can block the road. Before traveling on these roads,
check with NPWS to verify the conditions.
The
Snowy Mountains Highway is open all the way
Cooma to Tumut.

It's a long wait for two major roads to be opened .Elliot way and
Cabramurra ,Tooma road ,most of the others are tracks or trails u would think they wood fix them first .
A person I know went over Elliot way a couple of weeks ago said it was fine.
Cheers

Hi reggy 2,
I think your friend was foolish travelling on a closed road, unless he had authorisation, as there are serious fines if caught. Not to mention that there may have been trees damaged by the fire and ready to fall. Whilst I agree the “major” roads need to be checked and opened as a priority, there are only so many people able to
check & clear roads &
infrastructure, and I am sure they are working through a prioritised list.
Macca.

The point of posting this was to alert potential travelers to the area about the road closures, particularly the Elliot Way and the Tooma Road. They are 2 of 4 possible roads to cross from the West to the East of the
Snowy Mountains, and also the shortest routes to take. My wife asked at Snowy Hydro Visitor's Centre about the road closures and was told that the road in to
Cabramurra was closed but the Elliot Way was open. A few days later it was closed. The sheer number of trees which could and probably will fall is staggering. Also, I wonder of the NPWS are actually ashamed about the extent of the damage and are waiting until what regrowth will come has actually taken off to hide the damage. As for
Cabramurra, there was significant damage there, with something like 48 houses destroyed, so it is reasonable to keep people out of that area. The dreaded word ASBESTOS springs to mind here....

I guess people will feel that with the ski resort gone that they don't care about the at road however a large part of Elliot Way is halfway up a
hill, there is literally nowhere to work but on the road. Once Tooma road opens people should be able to head though to Tumut via
Batlow so I can see this being the priority.
