My good lady and myself quite often go for a drive on a weekend day, the day depends what else is going on that particular weekend. We usually travel out an hour or so, find a pub for lunch and return. We live in the Central West NSW so within a few kilometres we are at highway speeds and on our way, looking for somewhere new or a dirt road as an alternative route. So NSW and the Federal Govts are saying that we should all be staying
home unless its essential. A few scenarios in the news the other day, going fishing, going for a drive, picking up your girlfriend and going for an isolated picnic, (
check with your wife on that one), so the reply in the news article was a definite NO. Anyway we went out last Sunday after lunch for a few hours, returned, didn't leave the car so we don't see any issues here. The countryside is so green and beautiful at the moment so its hard to resist. I guess there is a possibility of a random breath
test or similar where Police would have the opportunity to ask you where you are going and why. ( random breath tests have been suspended in some states due to the virus). What do you think? Michael

Here in the city in NSW you can go for a walk in the park, but you cannot sit down - even if solo.. You will be moved on.
Little old lady went for her morning constitutional, needed a rest so sat on a bench and a few minutes later was moved on.
You cannot go on a metropolitan beach for a walk, let alone sit on the sand.
But you can walk in the park and pass close by other walkers on the path. It's weird.
Is it the same in other states?

Frank, in W.A., the restrictions are not so severe. You can go to
the beach, but no gatherings, no sunbaking, and social distancing in place.
No non-essential, "drives in the country", the message is STAY AT
HOME.
W.A. now has regional border controls, broken up into
Perth-Peel region, Mid-West, Wheatbelt, South-West, Great Southern, Goldfields-
Esperance,
Pilbara and
Kimberley regions.
You cannot move between regions unless it is essential.
Police roadblocks are on virtually every road between regions, you need supporting documentation to guarantee transit between regions.
W.A. - Border closures and travel restrictions
Cheers, Ron.

Here in good old SA, there is not the same level of restrictions as yet.
I would think that if my wife and I go for a 200km drive to the country for a day trip, as we do sometimes, and stop at a
bakery (which are still open for take away food here) for some food which we eat somewhere away from other people, then move on and get fuel at a servo somewhere (which are still open here) and then head on
home, we should be fine as long as we keep our distance from others along the way.
We could call it going out for medical reasons anyway for mental health?
I know we might have an accident or break down somewhere but surely in the unlikely chance of that happening, it would not be difficult to practice social distancing?

And then if you have a prang, you line up behind the other patients outside the hospitals, that are full of COVID-19 victims?
Doesn't sound at all sensible to me. I would dread having any bodily damage happen to me, that means I would have to be attended to, by an already overloaded hospital and health system.
Even in regular circumstances, there is "ambulance ramping" in some city hospitals, with patients having to wait for admission. And this is not "regular circumstances".
Cheers, Ron.

Wooly,
All those
places are open for people who NEED their
services. The criteria for NEED is NOT fulfilled by going for a recreational drive.
If you do what your post suggests you might do, you're just doing your bit the spread the bloody thing.
Just do what we're all being told to do. Stay at
home!

Fair go, David M, we're still dealing with the fallout from the Ruby Princess.
But he will get the rules clarified for him. Police have already issued fines for "out and about without good reason".
Because of the debacle with that damned ship and the Bondi Beach fiasco we're really playing catch-up here. Rules are pretty tight, though for some unknown reason, we and Vic haven't closed borders yet.

Thanks everyone for the replies.. This morning i saw our Prime Minister on TV saying get out and support the businesses that are open, we need to keep as much of our economy running as possible, his words.... Up here we have Big W, Target, The Reject
Shop all open, not much emergeny stuff in all of those.. All the Auto shops, four of them in total, Mitre 10 and Bunnings, the car park is overflowing. I'm guessing everyone at Bunnings is there buying that emergency tap washer... Takeaway food, coffee Shops for takeaway coffee and the hot bread shops are doing
well i'm guessing. NSW Parks sent me an email today saying that Camping and Picnicking is not allowed, but all National parks are open, no Visitor centres are open but all roads and walking
trails are open and please observe distancing rules when in the Parks at this time. These rules are in line with the NSW state Government the Email says... So if you cant drive to the National parks, the walking
trails must be for the lucky people who live next door within walking distance to the Parks.
You will be happy to know i changed the engine and transmission oils and filters on my wife's Corolla this morning and spent the rest of the day on the mower, we got 80mm of rain in the last few days, the grass is growing like crazy. I guess that will keep me busy at
home for a while.. Michael

Michael, I feel your pain. It is very difficult to make sense of all this.
If you accept the spirit of the instructions issued so far, and not just the spirit, the direct words from those in charge - ie stay at
home, don't go out unless for essentials and keep that to a minimum - then how does any of what you posted make sense? It doesn't, yet everything you say is true.
I cannot pretend to resolve this, other than to say that everyone should use common sense. Yes, I know that's in short supply and cannot be legislated for but that's what it boils down to.
Community common sense and co-operation.
I think the PM was wrong in saying "get out ....etc." That's just what we're being told NOT to do.
Talk about unhelpful mixed messages.

Gday Frank, yes we have state, federal, and everyone who can find a spot on a news clip involved. We
shop once a week and go
home, I ordered some things online from Supercheap and they arrived at our
gate to avoid contact with others. The problem is contact with others, going to get takeaway coffee and takeaway food is absurd and that adds more contact. Some of my detractors above would have far more contact with people than my wife and I, some have partners still working and some both are probably working, all that exposure to others but are very quick to criticize us for keeping to ourselves and going for a drive. But i did ask and they told me.. Common sense is the key, rules are not always correct nor right, they have been made up on the run. Regards Michael

I have been thinking about responding to this thred all night so now here goes;
In my life experience there are two types of people
1/ The UNTHINKING blind lemmings who follow "THE RULES" to the letter
2/The THINKING eyes open HUMAN BEINGS who follow the SPIRIT of the rules.
I suspect the OP is in the second category and l know that l am FIRMLY in the second category .
I cannot see anything wrong with going for a drive in the country, meeting no-one and not getting out of the car.
I know who will come out of this with more of a sane mind, it won't be the lemmings!

I don't know what State you live in Nick, but in W.A. there are only about 15 CLEAR, CONCISE REASONS, for going for a drive.
And with regional lockdowns in place, Police have roadblocks everywhere, to ensure that people are NOT just GOING FOR A DRIVE, without one of those specific reasons, being behind the NEED to travel.
And you need PAPERWORK and DOCUMENTATION to provide the specific reason for travelling between regions.
ABC News - the reasons that will get you through travel checkpoints
Cheers, Ron.

It's a bit like red lights when there's no traffic, isn't it?
The lemmings all stop and wait for the green.
I guess the thinking types analyse the traffic and drive through.

Frank, I've seen a court case where a bloke did just that, at 4:00AM at a deserted
intersection.
He stopped on the line at the red, looked both ways, nothing coming, and drove off through the red light.
But a red light camera captured him and they sent him a fine in the mail, and he was that outraged, he went to court to defend his reasons for going through the red light.
He wasted his money and his breath, the magistrate "sympathised" with him - but the law was the law, and the fine stood.
It's the same with red arrows, that stay red for a few seconds, when the straight-ahead goes green.
You can turn when the red arrow goes off - but if you move off, and turn while the arrow is still red (even if there's nothing coming, and it goes off as you enter the
intersection), it costs you $300 and 3 demerit points in W.A.
Cheers, Ron.

Thanks for the support Nick, i didn't get a lot of it. A lot of people are fairly primal and are happy to sit in front of their 75" TV watching re-runs of Rambo. I Like to be doing something constructive, i retired and bought a few acres to give me things to do and a little space. Everyone is different and nothing wrong with that, i hate being inside during the day if I don't need to be. Michael

People have got so vicious and nasty in this current enviroment. We are not far now from Nazi Germany with the current rules and regulations and where it was dob in your neighbor.

I get where you blokes are coming from as I am of similar mindset
The issue is that rules are made for those who can’t think for themselves and need to be lead and how are the authorities to know who is doing what so it is easier to just bag everyone up together to get the desired outcome which is fair enough too.

I would love to take my motorbike for a spin its good for over 400K before it needs fuel , its sitting in the garage with a full tank . My Y62 also is in the garage with a full tank , I cant see why I couldn't drive just a few K's to a couple of nice spots on a river I know close by to flick a few Trout flies . Both a ride or Fly Fishing would be good for the mental health . I haven't and wont do either .
But just on the news tonight a Mother took her 17 yo daughter for what was to be a short driving lesson , not stopping anywhere and a bloke sent his son to
check on a tree at their holiday house that a neighbor rang to say was about to blow over and destroy the fence .
Both copped a $1645 fine , that's in Victoria
