I am planning our next trip north into the Pilbara.

I came across the above named location whilst viewing Google satellite images. Looks to be an interesting location. However I can not find any reference to it in Exploroz places or Wikicamps.

The location is about 20km SW of Pannawonica on the Robe River. On EOtopo it appears to be shown as Gnieraoora Pool with a nearby station called Deepdale.

Looking carefully at the satellite images I can not find anything that looks like a station in the location of Deepdale. Maybe an old set of cattle yards at best. Also the tracks visible don’t appear to go through to the camp spot.

A search of the web doesn’t provide any useful information.

Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether this site is really a camp site and if it’s accessible to the general public. If so how do you get there?

Cheers John

Bing Satellite Maps (http://share.mapbbcode.org/) indicate for Deepdale a building without roof. The Sat Map also shows very faint tracks leading to the pool.

Hi John,

Here's some old maps that may assist you.
I'm not sure about current day.

1879 Map with old homestead and pool and Yerra Bluff shown

1902 map with Yerra Bluff.

1933 map with new homestead shown (Deepdale)

1954 map with Pool shown (and homestead now listed as outstation).

My place data base shows Deepdale (outstation) -
A house belonging to the woolhouses was recorded in this vicinity during the1885 surveys of F.S. Brockman. (field book 14, page 27 and 28).This property (lease n786) was first taken up by James Woolhouse in 1877.Between 1916 and 1921, after changing hands several times, the property was aquired by A.E.B. Lockyer and, at this time, the name Deepdale Station wasapplied to it. (see cancelled public plan 96/300 no.3).The property later became part of Yarraloola station and Deepdale homestead is now an outstation.

cheers
Alan

Hi Alan

Thank you. Interesting set of old maps.

It looks like the Panna gorge camp site (Name as per Google Maps) is located on the old stock route as per your maps. If the stock route remains gazetted then public access should be available.

Alternatively it is now all wrapped up in the Pannawonica mining leases.

I will ring the locals in Pannawonica and see what they have to say.

Cheers John

Deepdale Station Homestead burnt down years ago. All that is left are the stone walls. Deepdale & Yarraloola are leased by the Rio Tinto subsidiary Robe River Mining who in turn sub-lease it to a local station lessee who run their cattle there. Yirra Bluff is quite complicated to access with tracks, haul roads, railway tunnels & gates to negotiate.
