Pentercost
OK?
This spot is about 1km down stream from the Pentecost/
Gibb River Road crossing.
Sunsets are even better than sun rises :)
The road is a public road, but it is up to few hundred metres from the river and technically you can not leave the road because it is private property. The owner is
El Questro and these days they are unlikely to give permission, particularly as they tried unsuccessfully to close the road a few years ago and because they are currently closed for the rest of the year anyhow.
I am not sure how far north the
El Questro property goes. You may investigate that and contact the next property.
The other side of the river is
Home Valley and they have camping on the river, but just for sun rises. They are also closed for the remainder of 2020. Even better though because you would also get the
Cockburn Ranges in a sunrise shot from there.
Cheers,
Peter

The time I stayed at
Home Valley I went down to the river bank in the morning.
Parked between the Croc sign and the riverbank was a whiz bang, they had erected 2 single tents and the other two slept under the stars in their swags.
The crocs musn't like European food

If you turn north, on the eastern bank of the river right next to the crossing, you can travel a kilometre or so and find some
great camp space right on the bank of the Pentecost.
From memory it is a bit sandy in
places, and follows a sort of loop - but we got in there with no problem with our ute and TVan, and it was a great spot.
Just keep an eye out for the crocs :-)

Greendog :
Home Valley Station have a really nice location
bush camping site with bush facilities close to the edge of the river . it has a fantastic sunset site on the Rangers ..but a word of warning don't tempt the super slippery banks of the river or you may find yourself swimming with the crocs ..
Or as mentioned by others the crossing on the main road is another spot were many people
free camp , best not to go too far if you're towing gets a bit rough with no advantage , cattle also grase this area .

Last year the mossies were the worst I have ever encountered down by the water (
Home Valley Station) & every camper etc. after taking their photos retreated back to the
homestead to sit back at the bar & listen to the live music (inching & scratching) it was about the 18/20th of May & the whole of the Kimberly’s was the driest I have seen it in decades. Never did look it up to see if the previous wet was the driest on record (18/19) total contrast from coming thru Qld earlier with every
creek crossing from
Lawn hill to
Doomadgee- Hells
gate-
Borroloola , quite high in depth & glad to be in a high 4wd Isuzu truck but a few came close to staining the undies, Not one sign saying
road closed going north but the sign at
Borroloola going south was "Road closed"

It was dry & the flies were bad it’s not often I pull out the fly hat, on the plus side you did not need breakfast by 9am you had swallowed enough fly protein to get you thru the day
A lot of the usual swimming holes were pretty green & not that inviting, but if you are all smelling of pond water it did not matter

Pentecost River June 2019
The east bank was sandy, the west bank uneven rocky. There was hardly any water when we were there.
