80 series sub tank upgrade

Hi, i have an 80 series landcruiser and am wondering if anyone has put a fuel tank out of another landcruiser 90L or 130L and replaced the 50L sub?

It seems you wish to keep the OE main tank and fit a larger sub tank. If that is so, I can't see how a nearly twice as big subtank would fit there, let alone one which is way more than double the oe subtank volume. I haven't looked recently but can see much increase possible. Any decent increase may have to be by replacing the main tank.

Cozz,

Have had 2 80 series and replaced the sub tank in the 2nd one. Rather than use a Toyota tank that's not designed to fit in that position, investigate the purchase of an after market tank from Long Ranger, ARB or Brown & Davis.

We had ARB fit a 166L Long Ranger tank, which fitted well, never leaked and gave us over 1,000km range. The ARB poly tanks available now might be a better buy as they are much lighter than the steel tanks. Only drawback seems to be their lack of a drain bung.

You'll need to fit heavy duty rear coils too, or even extra H/D coils if you carry a lot of gear as well.

Yes I did it to our 80 and installed a LongRanger 150ltr to replace the rear sub tank. Was not a hard job and was worth it. In fact we are looking right now for a new tank for the 200 series. I linked the relevant article to this thread https://www.exploroz.com/vehicle/accessories/fueltanks.aspx

I had 3 oot long range 170 litre tanks in my 3 80's and had no issues....of importance, they have drain plugs....i would personally recommend looking for a used one from a 80 or even a 105 (same chassis) just make sure you get all the mounts with it....last thing i would want to do is play with tanks that dont fit. A mate took his spare out and installed a home made job where the spare was....as others have said, your going down a path of rear bar, heavier springs....and those accessories add up weight and cost

I put a 195Lt tank in mine some years ago, I got it from 4WD Systems in South Australia, was at a reasonable price and had no ptoblems with it at all. Great for long trips.

Hi as Dozer mentioned 90 liter Prado tank is a popular tank to replace the standard sub tank , though you will need a rear tire carrier as you will lose your spare tire space.
I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!
