Hi Stephen.
Looks like part of the
dog fence, possibly northern SA?

Hi Mike
Not part of the
Dog Fence, but in the late 1800’s like many pastoral properties, they did have their internal vermin control fences.
Right state, but a lot lower south.
Cheers
Stephen

The surrounding country looks a lot like the Southern
Flinders Ranges. I have not been to this particular site, so I cannot identify the exact location.

Sorry both Ozjourney and Allan.
Hancocks
Lookout is not as rough as this one and is in fact northeast of this near
Wilmington.

To clear this up, the first image is from Hancocks
Lookout looking towards
Port Augusta....
The view from Hancocks Lookout
Now if you go through the
closed gate...that you can not open, this is the view looking to the west and very different from Hancocks
Lookout.
The view from the the other side of the gate

Stokes
Hill . Looking at the topography with the 2 smaller hills in front both left and right, enlarging the photo to see the 2 vechiles dust trail. Also looking towards the NNW from your photo, I came up with that suggestion. At the moment stuck inside whilst its raining, I have been studing the map area

Sorry Garry
Not Stokes
Hill.
This great spot is still southeast of Stokes
Hill, and this spot is a lot more rugged.

Seems to have gone quiet here and I am intrigued.
As far as I can work out the clues you are NE of Hancocks
Lookout.
SE of
Stokes Hill Lookout and seemingly not all that far from
Wilmington....not sure if that is a correct assumption from your comment......Hancocks
Lookout is not as rough as this one and is in fact northeast of this near
Wilmington.
Checking the map I have and not having the experience of being in the specific area I wonder if you might be at
Eke Hill or
Eke Hill Peak
lookout which is near Johnburg, SA
Pure guess.

Hi Peter
Yes its gone quiet, as it looks like no one else seems to have been to this great place.
You are getting closer, but you now need to go further west.
Here is another hint.......
On top of that Range, you look down to the
Willochra Plains.
Here is an image taken town on the
Willochra Plains, with an old ruin and the Range is in the background.

I should have also said, that in the second photo, the
gate is at the top of the Range in the Middle
Hill, so why the
gate is there is a mystery, as if you kept going through the
gate.....its a very long way down to the Plains below and totally impossible to either walk or let alone drive, with one section a sheer drop

Thank you Stephen.
Working on your extra clues and trying to find an elevation where you might get that lovely view.
I cannot find your
gate in any research and as I reckon your last shot looks more like hills than a mountain range I wonder if you might be at Oladdie
Hill which does look over the plain with some nice
views similar to what you have shown. I have actually been to the Oladdie
mine and photographed there but have not climbed the hills behind but they do have some rugged
rock sections.
(Not sure if you are aware but I see on the map another Stokes
Hill, within
the Horseshoe Range).
Am I close?
Peter

Well Done Peter, your persistence has paid off.
Photos never seem to give ranges any justice, but it is the
Lookout on
the Horseshoe Range.
The Low Range Drive is located at the great
Horseshoe Top End, which is a magic place to
camp.
Here is another view from the top of the Range, looking down at the track below and the
Willochra Plains.
If you are ever in the area, don't overlook this great place.

We were typing at the same time and I found a Facebook page with a shot similar to your "ruins" take with the distinct ridge at the back.
The Facebook is Horsehoe Top End.
Check out the June 26
pic on their page which is close to where you stood.
Check out also a Facebook entry and
pic on April 28.....all about your
gate!
Looks a great place and on my bucket list to visit when next up that way.
