Hi team,

First time posting long term searcher - I hope this hasen't been asked, I did look!

I am in the market for a Hawk/Eagle/Dove probably 2011 depending on budget (14~18k) and wanted to know if you can mod or add on a slide out bbq tray or a kitchen of some sort? I really don't fancy cooking inside at all and will use it as backup cooking. I do have a weberQ and gas burners I use on a table outside at the moment with my 1983 Dove!

Thoughts?

Each to his own of course, but I have looked at quite a few vans recently and often they have a slide out kitchen and sometimes no inside cooking at all. Previously I had a Tvan and it had a slide out kitchen which is ok but on cold mornings and cool evenings it didn't suit at all. The lady freezes up. I also use a table and 3 burner Primus cooker when outside but having inside cooking is important to me. What you have already is what I would use, WeberQ and gas burner cooker when conditions ok.
I look at the slide outs as a lot of unnecessary weight to carry and ask if I purchased a particular van with both inside and outside, would they build one without the slide out, because I can use what I already have for that and inside appliances at other times. Asking for it too be deleted causes sales people to go into a trance/tailspin as they are trained to not understand anything other than the sales line.

RMD, I am with the OP and I am sure if I was in the market for a new van, deleting the indoor cooking stuff would gather blank looks from sales people......

Many vans and campers are now coming out with the slide out kitchen option. Good thing in my opinion. My mate has a jayco flamingo and has also thought about adding an outdoor kitchen . He doesnt cook inside as living in Northern part of Aus its too good weather wise to be cooped up inside cooking. After all we go camping to experience the outdoors. It could be done but in all honesty it would be better to buy a camper model with the kitchen already installed. The slide out kitchen, along with large airy windows is why I,d never go for a van. $14-18k probably wouldnt see you get into a jayco style camper but a forward fold or rear fold would be in your budget.

We had a Campomatic (offroad camper - canvas top) years ago an it had a first class slide out kitchen / stove module...plumbed to the gas and the water tank...sink, water pump, 4 burners etc. The Campo had a full size awning on that side and we could zip and end wall on as well, if needed. That said, a breeze / wind could compromise the gas burners, even with a snap on SS shield. As a result, on occasions we would still be cooking inside on a quick setup aluminium table, using the small portable gas stove (or two). With your intended purchase having a kitchen inside already, a reverse of the above methodology might seem the go ? Cook inside with those convenient facilities...on occasions outside ? From what I've seen on sales sites, it looks like you can open up those Jayco models for lots of through breezes and visibility, when required.

The cost of the purchase and installation of a slide in/out kitchen or BBQ would be so cost prohibitive as to be unviable in my opinion. You also need to consider what space inside you will lose in the process.

Much easier to have a portable hooded BBQ.
I use a Ziggy (Ziegler & Brown) and they are fantastic. The hood folds underneath for easier transportation and if you include a carry bag, sits in the back of the vehicle or on the floor of your van.
I use mine for a myriad of uses, including frying, BBQ, baking bread and anything else you can do with a hot plate or oven. I hardly ever take my camp oven with me any more.
I did get a bayonet fitting added to my van so I can use the on-board gas supply to plug into.
Love my Ziggy!

Hi ontheroadagain,

What do you mean when you say “outdoor kitchen”, do you just mean cooking facilities, or a plumbed kitchen sink as well? If just for cooking, then a hooded BBQ such as a Webber BabyQ, of a Ziggy as has already been suggested would be far more cost effective than a slide out “cooker”. Also, I think you would save on weight as well. Have a gas bayonet fitting plumbed to your on board gas bottles would mean you do not have to carry another gas bottle. Does your Jayco have a tunnel boot? If it does, depending on the size of the opening, a BabyQ or a Ziggy will generally fit in.

You could easily to mount a self contained slide out kitchen either on the front of the camper van or on the rear - just lower than where the beds slid out. With a bit of thought would be doable.

Something like this
