Has anyone 'recently' [pre-COVID] travelled this road? It appears on my map to be made at each end but dirt in-between. Can anyone confirm its condition?
Thank you.

It's a while since I was along it. At that time the road was sealed from Omeo to about 5 km past Benambra. From there to Colac Colac it was a well maintained gravel road. Zooming in on Google Maps satellite view confirms it is still like that. Have a look at Google maps yourself and check If I am correct.

G'day Gary T4, its actually sealed from Stacey's bridge through to Colac Colac and Corryong as well as the section of seal out of Benambra as previously mentioned.
It can get a bit rough in places but generally its a nice wide gravel road ok for 2WD's but may be a bit rough on tyres.
Regards, Gary M.

If the sealed section north of Benambra has not been extended, that makes a bit over 70 km of formed gravel road left.

Went in the direction your post says in April 2019. Some poor backpacker had 2 punctures in his beaten up old Paj so we helped get him to the tyre repairer. So that is a confirmation of the gravel conditions. Perhaps the tyres were old and brittle and worn. Too winding for my liking and not a lot of views due to dense forest. I was towing a 14 foot off road van.

Thank you for all replies. I was going to tow a Reconn R4 dual axle camper trailer over that stretch - but maybe use the road to Tallangatta instead.

That'll take you past the International Airport at Mitta Mitta.

If you’re planning to use the road from Omeo to tallangatta via Mitta Mitta, be aware that it is narrow, very windy and very slow. It is a superb drive with great scenery, and with good camping options along the way, but I wouldn’t consider it a shortcut! The dirt road through Nariel was pretty good a couple of years ago - towed a Tvan both ways - and a lot quicker. There was some bushfire damage around Nariel but I have no details. Over Hotham is your other option, and another fabulous drive. Wish I was making those plans...

The Omeo Highway also gets some crazy logging trucks though maybe not so much in winter.
The Great Alpine Rd is also great for scenery but needs to be checked as clear during the winter.
I would take the Nariel road hands down. It's not had the normal snow traffic and is probably in good shape.
