G'day forumites and lurkers,
When I bought the
old truck it had the full roll cage and roof rack. Four years ago when we settled in one place I removed the roof rack and bars as I detest roof racks. The bars went in storage behind the shed and the roof rack became part of the garden fittings and lived in the shade house. On many ocasions I thought of cutting the bars up to use on other projects but never got that far. Just as
well.
Now that I have a Big Trip coming up and need to carry more gear, and not wanting to drag the trailer behind all that way, I have had to resort to fitting the bars and roof rack again. It all went together with ease(plus a bit of heave and shove) and some minor adjustments.
The rack has a little more rust to it but nothing that can't be repaired with liquid steel or the like. Luckily the rack is free from the roof as it rests on the bars. Another thing which I have to do is to carry some jerries up there. Quite against the grain but they will be empty for most of the journey except for the long desert stretches. Need to carry at least 350lts all up of unleaded to get me from servo to servo.
So here I am....back at square one !!!!!! Never say never again :-)

Hi Willem. Couldnt keep your hands to yourself. Had to get back here!
Well, BACK TO THE FUTURE again with the ole Nissan(or is it Datsun)?
It frightens me to look under the bonnet of some of these newies with all the
electronic gizmos. Costs a heap to dismantle before U even see the bit you need to fix! Then it costs heaps for a one off special eleccy part which cannot be repaired by the road .
In my case they will have probably confiscated my licence due to age before
a supply of 2nd hand non-elec, non-computer 4bys dries up but pity you
others still growing up!! & waking up!

Hi Ian...been back a while.
It is a Nissan but in other countries it was still a Datsun as the changeover came gradually.
Yes, I looked under JohnR's Turbo Diesel GU coil cab bonnet the other day. More cluttered than a Mini. Also looked under the bonnet of Muddy'doe's Prado a while back and was surprised to see an engine bay similar to mine. Totally uncluttered...so thats a plus for the Prado.
I have heard that 95% of the vehicles rescued in the Simpson every year have had computer failures.
When do you ahve to go for your licence test? Couple of years, is it? As ong as there is petrol around my old truck will be running.

Willem,
is good to see the leads are sparking you there. I reckon I may have cluttered the under bonnet appearance of the GU a bit with an extra
battery, all the leads, a compressor and the hoses for the heat exchanger with the heat exchanger. Having the intercooler up top does not help either where I know the Breadbox has the intercooler in front. Don't know about the Playdoe.
Look, Rosie just looks so lovely and uncluttered, it's just that the ULP is a wealth
hazard. You just need an oiler to drop off the back of a truck in front of you into the engine bay. Reckon we will be having to go back to the northern Flinders before too long and try out those tracks and
camping spots of yours.
Best wishes to Judith too please,
Heather and
