G'day forumites and lurkers,

When I bought the old truck it had the full roll cage and roof rack. Four years ago when we settled in one place I removed the roof rack and bars as I detest roof racks. The bars went in storage behind the shed and the roof rack became part of the garden fittings and lived in the shade house. On many ocasions I thought of cutting the bars up to use on other projects but never got that far. Just as well.

Now that I have a Big Trip coming up and need to carry more gear, and not wanting to drag the trailer behind all that way, I have had to resort to fitting the bars and roof rack again. It all went together with ease(plus a bit of heave and shove) and some minor adjustments.

The rack has a little more rust to it but nothing that can't be repaired with liquid steel or the like. Luckily the rack is free from the roof as it rests on the bars. Another thing which I have to do is to carry some jerries up there. Quite against the grain but they will be empty for most of the journey except for the long desert stretches. Need to carry at least 350lts all up of unleaded to get me from servo to servo.

So here I am....back at square one !!!!!! Never say never again :-)

Willem,
I thought ULP would burn out your valves. Wouldn't Avgas be closer to LRP and therefore your fuel of choice?

Bob,

Where have you been hiding? Long time no read :-)))

When I rebuilt the motor some time ago I had the valves and valve seats changed for unleaded use. Have done 76,000km since the rebuild and she runs nicely.

As I have mentioned before, Truckster....it is a 5 metre paint job. Stand 5 metres from the truck and it looks good. Get close-up and you see the real Willem-paint-job. The digi camera takes good pics, eh? Time....yes I have all the time in the world but it is running out.....Go to www.deathclock.com and see for yourself........:-)

Willie......

Where's your ladder access?

Can't see it on your photo, must be on the L/H side?

I'm thinking about the 20 kg. Jerries, how you manage.

I just so much want a vehicle with THREE windscreen wipers.....

Cheers

Wolfie.....

No ladder access. Can climb on to bonnet to access or step on spare wheel at rear.

One jerry at a time. A pain I agree but what to do?

Yep the THREE wipers are unique......bring your chequebook with and we can talk turkey :-))))

Geez Willem must be a long way between servo's or the old bus drinks fuel as fast as I drink beer. You'd only get 6 or 7 jerrys on the rack where you putting the rest?

G'day Puddin,

Can probably fit 20 jerries on the rack of I tried.

The old bus does drink faster than you. Expecting 4km/l in the desert.
Have 110lt tank and 6 jerries inside vehicle plus 7 on the roof. Gives me close on 1500km range. So I can drive from Alice to Newman if I have to. Will try to get ULP at Kunawarritji or Parngurr.

Yes I know....spend $50,000 and buy a diesel so that I can get better fuel economy !!!...hahahahaha

Yep, the trip is after Beltana. I am going on my own at this stage. I hadn't made any definite plans because I had to wait and see when my next knee op was going to be and now they tell me June 05 so I'm free for this year and better make hay while the sun shines.

Willem,

There is a real good brand of jerry cans on the market that I reckon you should buy for your big trip. I think they're called "LION"........the good part about them is that they have this lovely paint on the inside of them that puts a nice coating on all the internals of your fuel system and stops it all from rusting....... LOLOLOL

The roofrack thing must be catching! I never thought I'd have one, but it beats towing the trailer over sand dunes (actually towing is fine, it's reversing that gets exciting)

Cheers

Hi Willem. Couldnt keep your hands to yourself. Had to get back here!

Well, BACK TO THE FUTURE again with the ole Nissan(or is it Datsun)?
It frightens me to look under the bonnet of some of these newies with all the
electronic gizmos. Costs a heap to dismantle before U even see the bit you need to fix! Then it costs heaps for a one off special eleccy part which cannot be repaired by the road .
In my case they will have probably confiscated my licence due to age before
a supply of 2nd hand non-elec, non-computer 4bys dries up but pity you
others still growing up!! & waking up!

Hi Ian...been back a while.
It is a Nissan but in other countries it was still a Datsun as the changeover came gradually.

Yes, I looked under JohnR's Turbo Diesel GU coil cab bonnet the other day. More cluttered than a Mini. Also looked under the bonnet of Muddy'doe's Prado a while back and was surprised to see an engine bay similar to mine. Totally uncluttered...so thats a plus for the Prado.

I have heard that 95% of the vehicles rescued in the Simpson every year have had computer failures.

When do you ahve to go for your licence test? Couple of years, is it? As ong as there is petrol around my old truck will be running.

Willem,

is good to see the leads are sparking you there. I reckon I may have cluttered the under bonnet appearance of the GU a bit with an extra battery, all the leads, a compressor and the hoses for the heat exchanger with the heat exchanger. Having the intercooler up top does not help either where I know the Breadbox has the intercooler in front. Don't know about the Playdoe.

Look, Rosie just looks so lovely and uncluttered, it's just that the ULP is a wealth hazard. You just need an oiler to drop off the back of a truck in front of you into the engine bay. Reckon we will be having to go back to the northern Flinders before too long and try out those tracks and camping spots of yours.

Best wishes to Judith too please,
Heather and

Willie,
Now that you've got the fancy pack-rack on the truck and it looks just like mine; you now need a big horn to mount up there. I've got a spare chrome trumpet-type horn in my shed (you just never know when you'll need a spare horn I always say!!).
Then you're old banger would look even more like my old banger!!! LOL
I gave Pesty a demmo of how loud it was when he was here one time....I think he coloured his dacks.

I wouldn't call your old banger an old banger. You must be due for a new one then...hahahaha........ over SWMBO's dead body!!!!! eh?!

So Pesty has tummy troubles as well? Poor fella.........

Good night....... I'm going to bed 'cause it is cold here at 600m above seal level.

Gosh, Willem - would love to have Rosie - parked at the front gate, wouldn't it bring them in. Talk about FREE advertising. Yep, you can have my LC100 - I'll even own it in November (but I couldn't bear it to have a roof rack) - at least it's got long range diesel tanks.
Laughed about Sully's trailer - when he and Ian went up to Diamantina (Ian's ute was loaded to the gunwales) - Sully had to borrow the loo paper and the coffee because he couldn't find anything in his trailer!!!! He's home now and whingeing about the temp being -3 in the a.m.

Hello Ruth

Will probably be up your way the first week in September. No, it will be after the races...I hate crowds. Going to complete my Simpson trip as there is a piece in the middle that I have not done. Then across to the western Deserts and Rudall River NP and then down the Eagle Hwy and the Connie Sue to the Nullarbor...then down along the beach to Israelite Bay and a look around the South West before heading home. Gotta do it this year 'cause next year I will be out of action again. This will be another solo trip unless Uncle comes with me. He is back in town and in better health but we haven't caught up yet.

Oh good, maybe I should go over the SD with you instead of going up to Diamantina Lakes with all the races mob. Hmmmm that has distinct possibilities. On Monday 6/9 Ian is taking the fishing tag-a-long until Saturday, but I could go awol and go to the Desert. I'm not asking for permission Willem, Ima tellin' you. Your full trip sounds good - will check the maps tonight - did you see Len Beadell on ABC the other night (Truckster told us about it)?

But I can see the changes and he does not look himself any more...you get that after 60, so I am told...hahaha He is keen to go with but the trip is still two months away and a lot can happen in that time.

No, I missed the Len Beadell TV story. Can't remember what I was doing but it must have been important.

If Uncle puts his mind to it - he will. Only two months away - you will be busy till then, knowing you. Sully rang this afternoon - taken him two weeks to unload the trailer and put it in the shed - now he's found the loo paper and coffee and all the million others things stored under his bed - including his 50 tins of bully beef for when he ran out of fresh!
LOL. Very cold at his place and having a mouse plague - a neighbour caught 90 yesterday.
