G'day Allan
I'm pretty sure we've seen that ...... but where ???? It was part of a walk and something to do with locals.
Part of a loop walk I think, and a little trek uphill and on a detour to see it.
Maybe I'm dreaming !!!!

Cheers

Ah, found it. Bit closer to home after all. Nice area. Forgot we'd been there recently ..... think the day was pretty overcast so no photos. And now I've been reminded what the strange top is all about.

Cheers

Strangler Cairn, Conondale NP. A renowned artist ? built it, and planted a strangler fig in the top, which should work its way down the sides naturally ........ or something like that.

Lovely area inland from the Sunshine coast ....... don't tell anybody though. :)

Cheers, and thanks for reminding me

Yes Jim, that's it. I'll send the cigar by MM.

Just Google "Strangler Cairn" for a heap of links. Here is one that informs.

The project was to create an artwork in the rain forest that had the unique concept of having a Strangler Fig planted in the top with the expectation that it would grow and envelop the cairn. Maybe in a couple of hundred years.
The weak point of that idea was that Strangler Figs take root in the bark of forest trees and gain their nutrient there until eventually (and that's a loooong eventually) the roots reach the soil and away it goes. Perhaps the artist did not notice that there is not much bark on a rock cairn, Doh!

Accordingly, the cairn is now on its fourth strangler seedling and a mat has been installed around it with the intent of retaining moisture. Well good luck with that. They do say that artists need to suffer before achieving greatness.

However, it is a nice walk of about 6km from the carpark so I'll keep visiting and hope that the seedling is thriving. It is a maybe half-hour drive from my home.
Cheers

I could be miles out, but looks like scenery on the back way to Rainbow Beach and north of Noosa?

I gave you a wave as a satellite passed Allan. Probably being assessed by the Americans, Russians and Chinese as we speak. Not that anyone probably gives a fig for my rambling but there's a cryptic clue in a forum name and his bent.

For those who have not seen strangler vines, here is a photo of how one wraps around a tree:

And here is one where the tree has died and leaves a hollow lattice of the still thriving fig.
