Had planned to head east west from
Papunya via
Kiwirrkurra Rd to
pilbara but with the covid shutdown the Aboriginal communities are closed and hence no fuel.
Are there any other fuel possibilities along this route?
I've also heard of closures on the Tanami, my second choice. Same question for that road.
Thanks

It is called the
Gary Junction Road.
I would call a couple of communities. Getting fuel is not the same as "visiting" and they may be able to help.
Cheers,
Peter

I think the new name is Kwirrkurra, the older being
Gary Junction.
According to the WA gov site closed is closed except for certain essential workers or emergencies.
Looking to see if there are other fuel stops

I can't find any evidence of any name change. Do you have some?
Cheers,
Peter

Not exactly a names authority?
A change of names is a complicated b/autocratic exercise. :(

I spoke to CLC a week or 2 ago and they said road open and you can get fuel. (bowsers in the communities are remote from the stores and contact can be avoided)

I have received permits this week for transit (2 needed) along the
Gary Junction from
Papunya to the Talawana Track for about 4 weeks time.
Kunawaritji (2 days ago) told me there is fuel available/open at
Kintore,
Kiwirrkurra, and Kunawaritji for east/west travelers (but do not be trying to go down the CSR...).
However, when I applied for my WA section permit (received, approved for transit only) I also received a call from DIA (a very helpful officer) to tell me that the WA-side communities were 'listed' as not to visit, COVID-wise.
So, I suggest, before you go, that you do last minute checks of what, seems to me, to be a moveable feast.
As a 'helpful' addendum, there was an ABC news item (with video) about 2 week's ago about
the Tanami Track being a bit rough (as in breaking every second chassis rough)...
Cheers.

John, yes I saw that story on ABC about the Tanami. I wonder if the cause of the road deterioration is the increased use of transport trucks or if it was just to pressure the public/government to upgrade the road/bitumen to continue its use as a trucking thoroughfare or whether it has actually changed at all.... Seems the same story is told every single year about the Tanami for the past 25 years! Last time we traversed the Tanami I had an 8mth old baby who turns 21 this year. The footage in the news story looked no different to it was then and there were complaints then and rumours about it "soon" being bituminised...

That's pretty much the same as
places like
Warburton. We asked that very question about three weeks ago and they replied that "use of the roadhouse/store facilities is OK, that's not the community", although every time we've been there it seems half the community is too - it seems to be just after a funeral closure/re-open.
