Has anyone driven the "old" Perenjori to Rothsay road via Damperwah?
Looking to take a 2WD SUV across to Paynes Find from Perenjori, via a visit to old Rothsay townsite, and would prefer to do the old Rothsay road instead of the boring Coppermine road if possible.
The Shire indicates it is a 4WD track, but 4WD doesn't always mean 4WD.
Thanks

We towed our camper trailer through the Karara Rangelands in September last year, driving the Perenjori to Rothsay Road from Karara Road through to the Rothsay mine site.

I don't remember any part of it being particularly difficult with that particular 20km stretch taking 46 minutes averaging 27kph, but that was with lots of stops to check out the wildflowers

Here's a video I did that shows what most of the roads were like through the area (in between the wildflowers), it might be of some help.

Thanks Rainman, that's very helpful. Looks like pretty good roads, were there a few soft or sandy spots? Looked like that may be the case as you approached Damperwah.
Which track were you on at 10:28 in the video, with the lake to your right?

From memory the Boonerong Road from the Rothsay Road to Coppermine Road may have been a bit sandy, but in general the roads were mostly hard and well formed as seen in the video.

The road at the 10:28 minute mark is the Old Warriedar Road that runs along side Mongers Lake.

Hi Warren
We camped at Damperwah last November for a week. We came in from the east side and camped for a couple of days beside Mongers Lake before heading to Damperwah. The only places on the Rothsay Road that a 2 WD might struggle are two gouged out small creek crossings a few kms to the west of the Damperwah camping zone.

What SUV are you using? As long as it has a bit of clearance you "should" be OK.

We did a lot of the tracks through Karara Rangeland last year, just a few dry river crossings that needed a smidge of clearance, With the rain lately the river beds could well have changed.

Mitsubishi ASX.
I ended up bailing on the old road after getting bogged axle deep on the shoulder of the bitumen road just out of Perenjori ?????
Didn't realise how damp it had been out that way. Some of the road shoulders were like quicksand. Wasn't game to take my chances on some of the creeks.
Had no issues on the Coppermine Road.

Get in contact with the Yalgoo shire as some roads in the NE of the Rangelands have been recently washed away. We spoke to them 14/04/2022 but unfortunately I can remember the exact road names that are closed. If you stay to the west of the park you should be right.

Thanks, I wish I had seen this reply a bit earlier. They certainly had some rain out there! Lots of wash outs being repaired along the Yalgoo-Ninghan Road and the Thundelarra Road has only just dried out today in a few soft spots.
