Many times. It is our preferred route, but it is currently closed.

South of Merty Merty, the Old Strez is on private property.
The road to Cameron Corner is public and that is a nice drive over the dunes.

My comment is bit dated, Oz, but in Nov 2015, I met a couple, both Seniors, at Innamincka, on their way to Birdsville via Cordillo Downs road.

They had a smaller model Jeep towing a tandem pop top van, and had had no trouble coming up the Old Strez track. In fact I recall them saying it was very good.

I’d suggest that most of those roads in that area, around the gas fields, would see a grader on a regular basis. Certainly more than an annual patrol grade anyway.

Steve,

I've also travelled it many times, last time was 2018 - in the dry its an easy road. In 1978 we travelled it in a Corolla Wagon.

Only warning is not to take it too fast because there is the odd sharp dip that you can hit by surprise. We towed our single axle offroad caravan last time.

The road south from Merti merti to Strezlecki Crossing is no longer accessible to the public and having looked for it when driving past from both ends, I don't think its still there.
This is the old sign that used to be at that intersection at Merti Merti:

Here is a photo of the old Corolla on the Old Strezlecki track:

We did it last year - good trip, and nice alternative to the "new" Strzelecki via Moomba. Certainly nothing difficult about the old Strz, unless it's been raining of course.

We travelled down the Old Strez in 2017 on advice from a truckie we met at the Innaminka pub. He told us it would be a nicer drive, less rocky & would avoid meeting up with a number of large machinery carrying road trains coming up. Driving out of Innamincka the corrugations were bad & then we came upon the sign for the Old Strez warning that it was not a maintained road & wondered if we were doing the right thing. We pressed on & found the Old Strez to be in very good condition & a very pleasant drive. At the bottom we turned left, eastward toward Camerons corner following the 'rollercoaster' dune road which was also well worthwhile. Provided it was not wet we would happily use the Old Strzelecki Track again.
