Hello, I am looking for any updates on the
East Pilbara Diversion. I am particularly keen on the section between
Shay Gap and
Marble Bar, as
well as the section between Currawine
Gorge and
Nullagine. We will be starting the trip from 80 Mile Beach next week sometime.

Not been on
Shay Gap to
Marble Bar for a while but remember it as pretty good outback dirt.
Carawine to
Nullagine, the Skull Springs Road, used to be a narrow windy track (six years ago) but last year was much improved.
A favourite part of the
Pilbara. I’m heading that way in a fortnight and looking forward to it.
Enjoy the trip.
Cheers
Rocco.

Thanks Rocco,
The Boreline Road from
Shay Gap to 80 Mile is in good condition. The Shire has a crew working about half way along. We will post any more news we get. Safe travels.
Regards
Darren

What Rocco said :)
This was our
camp site at
Shay Gap a few years back....
This is a track to the top of the
hill where there used to be tanks for the town.

Shay Gap to
Marble bar was always a great trip, especially when the
Marble Bar races were on! Thirsty work, let me tell you. It was always a difficult navigation exercise getting back to
Shay Gap the next day for reasons that are still unclear to me. A great fog would envelope my memory and got lost easily.
The other memorable experience on that road was when the De
Grey river was in flood (circa 1991?). No way of crossing it then as it was about 400 metres across and flowing at about 20 knots!

Once I crossed the DeGrey at night. It was flowing about 1 foot above the ford.
I asked my old man to get on top on the cab and shine the torch down to the water so I could see it more clearly than the forward point vehicle lights.
We crossed the whole thing with a sheer 1 metre drop on the west side of the ford.
Didn't tell mum till a few years later.

Margaret and I worked on Yarrie Station for a couple of months in 2008.
These 2 pics of the DeGrey were taken from about the same spot near the
homestead, one day apart. We drove across here in the OKA.

DeGrey River 14th June 2008.

DeGrey River 15th June 2008.
The crossing was closed to traffic for over a week.
The crossing from the chopper... The river has dropped 2m.

DeGrey River 20th June 2008.
Note the vehicles on the NE side of the crossing. That is on Yarrie Station, they are good people and that spot is commonly used as a
camp site.
The Yarrie and Muccan properties also include the area around
Shay Gap, so if you want to wander about, have the courtesy to give them a call first.
My first attempt at driving across.....

DeGrey River 22nd June 2008.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Peter.
Amazing rain for June!
There was some unseasonal rain up there a month ago. I’m looking forward to seeing some green in a few weeks.

At Yarrie, we got 32mm of rain. 150km upstream, 3 mining trucks were washed off a crossing. Yarrie sent a chopper up there to help recover one of the drivers stuck in his truck. Some areas upstream got 100mm.
