Hi All. I have searched for previous threads on this subject, but found only quite old ones dating back over 7 years ago, and that was also not related to oversized (3m beam) boats.

I need to tow my oversized boat from Whitsundays down to Sydney, and hoping someone here has recomendations on the best route to follow taking into account current roads, traffic patterns and road conditions.

I am expecting this to be a multi day towing exercise, with oversized restrictions allowing me to travel only between sunrise and 1 hour before sunset, excluding peak traffic times as well. I am happy to be corrected on these rulings, as it is not absolutely clear from reading several different sources on this topic.

From a safety perspective, I would only want to tow during the day anyway.

Any actual experiences towing oversized boats between these end points will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, the link here may help for NSW bit, maybe QLD has something similar

Link NSW

They have an interactive map here. Map link. Looks like when you click on brown or black sections of the routes it pops up details of the restriction, ie width or height or weight. Looks quite good.

Thanks Duncan. Will check these out now. It does seem those links are for Heavy Vehicle road networks.

From what I can tell, the only dimension I am exceeding is the load width being 3m as opposed to the 2.5m standard width. My GVM for Landcruiser and ATM for Boat Trailer are within the allowed 4.5T each, and the total length of the combinaton is less than 19m.

Not sure if those network maps apply to my scenario.

Thanks

Google is your friend. Type guidelines for transporting oversized boats in Queensland. There is a booklet. For boats up to 2.9 metres. 3 metres needs a special permit. The booklet also advises which roads prohibited. I have no knowledge in this area, just got curious. We regularly see big boats on flatbed semis on the Bruce Highway

Matt

Whilst I recognise that you are trying to do the right thing there is one thing that you will need to take into account, that is the fact that the NHVL (National Heavy Vehicle Law) ONLY applies to vehicles having a GVM greater than 4500kgs, that means they do not apply to Toyota Landcruisers towing oversize loads.

To the best of my knowledge there are no provisions within the Law or any associated guidelines that allow for vehicles of up to 4.5t GVM to be able to exceed gazetted dimentions (ie 2.5m width, 12.5m vehicle length, 19m combined length and 4.3m height)

Police in the various states MAY be able to give you a permit for a specific purpose, and if so it would probably specify the route that must be taken.

I would hate to see you stopped by the authorities and be directed not to move the boat untill a suitable vehicle (and licenced driver) were to be found.

Regards
Athol

Thanks for the reply Athol. Appreciate your input.

Following Mikes advice, I found this document by QLD Transport https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/ckan-publications-attachments-prod/resources/0725f52e-f091-4258-b75d-235bd4686898/oversize-special-use-light-trailers-and-oversize-boats-on-light-vehicles_sep21-final.pdf?ETag=ecfe8570d79730bd584de6046291cc3c

which seems to be guidelines to tow overwitdh boats on light (up to 4.5T) trailers through QLD. Unfortunately it covers overwidth between 2.5 and 2.9m only

My setup is a LC 200 upgraded by Lovells with certification to tow 4000kg, and GVM 4200Kg. My trailer ATM is 4.5T, Tare 1120kg and Boat weighing 2850Kg.

Matt

Thank you for bring that document to my notice.

As you have mentioned it really only covers up to 2.9m but does at least give the information as to where to go for up to 3.3m width by completing for no F4880 which appears to be fairly straight forward, so long as you have a Qld Customer No (drivers licence no).

Have fun and safe travels.

In NSW, over width is allowed between 10.30pm and 4.30am as ive had to plan a few jobs like that working at the steelworks wollongong.
Friend brought an oversize boat from gold coast to sydney overnight. He had to drive into servos and reverse out, something to consider also
