Oricom UHF radios and antennas

Thanks but that wasn't my question. What is your experience with Oricom?

I thought that was Stephen's experiences..."GME is superior, Oricom is inferior".
That has been my rxperince also!

A better answer would have been "i have used both Oricom and GME and found GME to be superior".

Then a brief explanation of why would have answered the question.

That distance for communication is not common, but can occur. I have communicated with another vehicle over 20 kms away on top of a sand dune in the Simpson Desert. However, this distance is rare, usually you will be lucky to get more than a few kms. As others have stated, the antenna is the most important part of any radio communication system.

As far as comparing GME and Oricom, I have a pair of handheld 2 watt Oricom units used for assisting with reversing the caravan, and a fixed in car 5 watt GME XRS, with a 6 dBi antenna mounted on the Bull bar. In my opinion, the GME is a far superior unit, but you pay for that superiority.

This used to be a really good forum and very helpful. I can see why so many forums have died and moved to Facebook.

Leroy I think the humour comes into it because these questions get asked continuously over the years hoping that someone will tell them the cheap stuff is good and don’t waste your money on the Aussie or Japanese made stuff

For me the minimal price difference isn’t worth the risk but I am sure if you ask enough you will get the answer you want to hear from someone

I thought it was pretty funny.

My older brother made a crystal radio set when he was in high school. Worked OK as well. Don’t know where he got the old cylinder type ( pre records) music player from.

Sadly - humour is vanishing from this once great country, mainly due to political correctness and nearly everyone these days getting offended at the unoffensive !

For years, people world wide just loved the Aussie sense of humour but now it's heading towards a thing of the past and unfortunately it can't be put in a museum !

Its vanishing because silly old fart humour is not funny.

Hate to tell you guys this but silly old farts is where all of the knowledge and experience is that was aquired over many years of real experience, not just a few hours of reading a bit of stuff on the net that was probably written by someone just like yourselves, that have no experience at all.
On forums you have to be choosy whose advice you actually take but hint, go with the silly old farts.

There are hundreds of very intelligent, very experienced and very knowledgeable old farts on this forum - many of who have helped me when I posted a topic requiring information and knowledge on a topic I needed advice with !

I've only got another 15 years to go before I become a silly old fart with experience and knowledge :)

The flip side is that there is also a lot to learn from the young “ tech savvy “ people as well using technology to make old ways easier. It pays to be open to and listen and learn from everyone you meet.
Some you may just learn what not to do but as long as you learn….

I've had numerous GME and Uniden radios over the years and been happy with them. Maybe if I had of posted I was looking at the cheap GME people would then say ah no you really should spend the extra and get xxxx model. I thought people would be open to trying something new. Well Oricom aren't that new and I'm sure they can't be all bad. Most of the things electronic are made in China including the laptop or PC people are using to reply to these posts! I suppose this is where the old saying comes from, you can't teach an old dog new tricks (or new jokes).

The Chinese stuff is definitely getting better. I've noticed it in many areas. It reminds me of when we used to call Japanese stuff junk when I was a lot younger. Then it was Korean junk. And commenting on a sense of humour is a joke in itself. Nobody will ever agree on that so it's a waste of time and ends up coming across as a baseless insult. Whether a joke is funny or not is only relevant to each individual.

They aren't Chinese. People just assume.....

The majority of GME radios are designed and manufactured right here in Sydney on their own SMT line. The portables are made in China and they own the factory anyway.

My Granddaughter is 14 and she thought it was funny but my 7 year old grandson didn't, so I guess the cut off point for humour is in between 7 and 14 somewhere :)
