Planning a holiday trip for December and stuck at breaking the Townsville to Darwin leg to 4-5 hours per day -travelling with kids-.
Can anyone offer advice on the best places to stop and stay, please? It will be very welcome!
We are planning:
Day 1: Townsville to A
Day 2: A to Mount Isa
Day 3: Mount Isa to Tenant creek
Day 4: Tenant creek to C
Day 5: C to Darwin

We have done Toowoomba to Katherine several times to visit grandies.

Suggest you get Wikicamps and Petrolspy appsto help with your planning. Also use Google maps for distances.
Depending on whether you want caravan parks or no frills stops.
Your travelling average is likely to be about 80km/hr.
A= Hughenden or Richmond
Mt Isa to Tennant Ck is nearly 700km so Barkly Homestead is a good stop. Then Banka Banka park.
Work out your fuel with Petrolspy. Fuel at Threeways is a LOT more expensive than Tennant Ck. It may be better to travel the 25km to and from Tennant Ck and refuel.
Manbulloo Homestead at Katherine. Tip, if needed try to go to Woolworths early in the morning.
Katherine to Darwin is about 3 hours.

I’d agree with most of Rod’s advice. At that time of year, try to get your daily travel over by midday-1pm.
Copper Gate Motel in the Isa has large rooms, laundry & a swimming pool! Easy walk up to Overlander Pub for good evening meal.
5.25Hrs to Barkly Homestead, at 90kph, where they have aircon in rooms & a swimming pool too! Fuel was cheaper than 3-Ways too.
Hiway Inn, at Daly Waters, has plenty of rooms, good meals & a pool. Bigger day from BH though.
Agree about Mataranka/Bitter Springs being great. Not sure about accomodation though, as we were in a van this year?
Should be able to knock off the journey then to Darwin, comfortably the next day.
Refuel at big Puma outlet, just south of Katherine. 4c off for RACQ Card, and plenty to eat & drink.

Kids will really appreciate a stop at Mataranka Hot Springs. Great for easing any travel aches and pains for adults also.
