A little story from 2008.
We had camped on the top of the escarpment north of Telfer
Mine to
check our emails and make a couple of phone calls and we could hear the guy on the Telfer
gate on the UHF. The HEMA map at that time said it was necessary to contact Telfer to get permission to use the
Mine Road to
Marble Bar. We were pretty sure that was not correct (it never was), but before we set off next morning, we gave them a call anyhow.
The guy on the
gate said that we needed to call into the
gate to get permission and despite our protestations, he insisted, so we drove the 30 odd km into the
gate. By the time we got there he had discovered that he was wrong and apologised profusely, saying he was new on the job and had not understood exactly where we were.
He asked us to wait and shortly his supervisor arrived and requested we follow him into the
mine site.
Telfer
Several km into the site, he stopped at a diesel bowser and invited us to help ourselves in compensation for the trouble they had inflicted. As I poured the fuel in, I asked what was a " reasonable thing here?" and he replied "100 litres will be fine". Not bad for a 60km diversion. :)
Cheers,
Peter
