Drove it E-W in 2005 and again in 2008 towing a boat.
It is a drive we enjoy. Not much traffic, not too many corrugations and friendly communities.

A little story from 2008.
We had camped on the top of the escarpment north of Telfer Mine to check our emails and make a couple of phone calls and we could hear the guy on the Telfer gate on the UHF. The HEMA map at that time said it was necessary to contact Telfer to get permission to use the Mine Road to Marble Bar. We were pretty sure that was not correct (it never was), but before we set off next morning, we gave them a call anyhow.
The guy on the gate said that we needed to call into the gate to get permission and despite our protestations, he insisted, so we drove the 30 odd km into the gate. By the time we got there he had discovered that he was wrong and apologised profusely, saying he was new on the job and had not understood exactly where we were.
He asked us to wait and shortly his supervisor arrived and requested we follow him into the mine site.

Several km into the site, he stopped at a diesel bowser and invited us to help ourselves in compensation for the trouble they had inflicted. As I poured the fuel in, I asked what was a " reasonable thing here?" and he replied "100 litres will be fine". Not bad for a 60km diversion. :)
Cheers,
Peter

Good trip, and certainly not challenging. Need a couple of permits for aboriginal lands, and a fat wallet for fuel.
Good camping at Carawine Gorge not far from Marble Bar, at Lake Dora, at Well 33 as you cross the Canning, Jupiter Well, Buck Hills.
Don't rush, it's an enjoyable journey

“………fat wallet for fuel.” How true that is, Wildmax! :-)

We camped at Mt Webb one night too. Old grader drivers camp, judging by all the edge blades scattered around. Bit light on for wood though.

We just drove that in reverse few weeks ago. You can use the ExplorOz Traveller app to calculate distance.

Hi James,

As well as using the Exploroz Traveller app to help with navigation and trip planning, you can also use the Hema Road & 4WD Atlas. The Hema atlas is not cheap, but I find it great to help plan and calculate distance and time when planning a trip. I then use the navigation app to create a trek.

Worth adding a little to the distance by going to Marble Bar from Carawine Gorge via the scenic Skull Springs Rd (with it's great camp spots at Running Waters & at Skull springs itself) & Nullagine.

Check out our blog posts from 30th July 2018 & again from 27th August 2018

Fuel is also often cheaper at Nullagine than Marble Bar.

Carawine Gorge is on Warragine Station and as such is private property. The owners generously allow unrestricted access (unless mustering is in progress).
Please treat it with the greatest respect and take your rubbish with you.
Best access is to turn right across the end of the airstrip.

Did this road in early August this year for the 4th or 5th time. West - East. Unfortunately the road hadn't been maintained as well as previous times, not disgusting but we were a little disappointed considering how good it has been. Probably over Covid there wasn't a need or much traffic. Hopefully it has seen a grader blade since then. Interestingly fuel was still 3.40 a litre at Kunawarratji, the same price it has been for the last how many years??
