The old Stuart hwy into Bon Bon station north of the Kingoonya turn off now has a barrier fitted and warning signs to prevent people using it. The road is no longer maintained and the Station owners dont want people using it at all.

Seems like it is no longer a station, but a reserve. Wonder if yahoo campers were the problem?

"Bon Bon Reserve is a 2,164-square-kilometre private protected area located in the Australian state of South Australia, west of the town of Roxby Downs in the Woomera Prohibited Area. It is owned and managed by Bush Heritage Australia. "

Which part of the road is closed? Is it the part from Kingoonya to the highway or the highway to Bon Bon Station? It may be part of this (copied from Bon Bon Station)

"Erosion control

"Erosion has been identified using historical information and aerial surveys. One of the areas in need of significant repair works was the Old Stuart Highway south of the homestead."

The old Stuart Highway between the new highway and Bon Bon is not shown on the map posted by Barry G.
It goes north just to the west of Gosses.
1:250,000 version.

I have driven it 5 times, 4 times in a Mini and the last time (in 1974) in a VW Kombi Camper. :)

For those interested, the Old Stuart Highway did change its route from time to time in the 'old' days, but this section of the version that I drove several times in the 60s and 70s went via Kingoonya, Bon Bon, Mt Eba, The Twins, McDouall Peak, Ingomar and Coober Pedy.
The new version was a couple of hundred km shorter.

EOTopo 2023 shows that this area is within a Continuous Use Zone in the Woomera Protected zone and if you go to the Woomera website you'll see that it's closed to all but defence personnel.

Yet its marked as a substantial dirt road on EOTopo when in reality, in the words of a station owner, " it's an impassable goat track". He complained that they still get people trying to drive it.

On EOTopo it's still maked as the old Sturt Highway. On Hema it's marked as MVO

Hi Ivan, as already stated, the roads into Bon Bon Station are now all closed to the general public. As Judy and I are members of Bush Heritage, they hold a station tour once a year and limited to 12 people. When we were there last (just prior covid) Clint Taylor the station manager stated that he and volunteers were slowly removing all internal fence lines as well as all man made dams. This was to revert back to the natural landscape. and deter unwanted animals like pigs gathering at water sources etc.
As for Mt Eba Station, the owners Margie Whittlesea, have also locked some gates as to discourage civil traffic. They also own several other stations in that general area.
Just for useless info, Bon Bon opens a particular track/road for 6 weeks that woomera allocate, as Mt Eba etc need to transport cattle off the properties. Official can close that window at any time, but will allow enough time for the trucks to leave,
