Hello. Has anyone driven the Hugh River Stock Route in the NT recently? I want to get to Chamber's Pillar that way. I need to know if it's open and how easy/difficult it is.
Even if you have not driven it, does anyone know whom to contact to find out about it?

Drove it years ago, a straight forward very easy drive and if you took your time, you could drive it in a Mini

Thanks. When did you do it? I'm wondering if it's the same now - I read one post saying it has a
locked gate at the Stuart Hwy end.

It was a few years ago, but would like to know why it would have locked gates.
Can not understand why they would have them as in the event of a train issue, it takes you straight to the main Ghan Railway Line when you then drive under the track.
The road was a very
well maintained

Have diven it plenty of times over the year , very unlikely that the
gate was locked .
But there is a Aboriginal community off the track ?? Maybe a covid thing , you could probably look at NT roads .
Whats you plans for the track ?

Drove it some years ago too. It was much better than the Finke road.

One piece of advice, if I recall, don't get lost crossing the rail line, especially if travelling W-E. :)

I am going west-east. the map shows a left turn going north after going under the railway line - does that sound right? I have the Exploroz map, too

Tony..If travelling East along the H R stock route you will cross over the train line then turn left along track beside train line through the Hugh river then travel east again ..a nice spot for a stop off.. There is a access road that travels along the eastern side of rail line used by the railways .
The rail line
bridge that crosses the hugh river was built by
John Holland construction back in the 70's along with other bridges in the area ..

Hi Tonyrieko,
Like the others, I drove it back in 2016, towing my 2.6 Tonne off road caravan. it was a very good gravel road back then. Of course things do change.

We've been in Alice for the last 3 days and there are definitely buggies and bikes pre-running ATM. Our route was via
Kulgera to Finke to Old
Andado Station, Saint Teresa. The track from the TO to Mt Dare to OAS was sort of reasonable to
Andado Station. From there it was made challenging by all the standing water filling a lot of the normal tracks so there are hard to find bypass tracks everywhere but you will miss some and find yourself looking for a way out and back to a better track at times. From the TO to Mac Clark's reserve to Saint Teresa was rubbish and probably the worst track we've driven in a very long time and I'm comparing it to the Tanami, GCR, GRR and others
