Hi All,

I'm planning a trip for June to September this year and have a Goldstream 1760 Pop Top Full Off Road Caravan. Can anyone advise whether the following roads are suitable. Buchanan Hwy and the Buntine Hwy suitable to tow a caravan through from Daly Waters to Halls Creek.

After there we want to head north to El Questro and then across the Gibb River Road allowing 4 days to travel the Gibb stopping at Ellembrae Station, Manning Gorge, Windjana Gorge Camp Ground then into Derby.

Any tips and advise is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Frosty

The Buchanan from the Stuart to Top Springs can get quite corrugated - nothing dramatic but annoying - depending on how recently the stock transporters have been hammering it vs the grader schedule.

From Top Springs down to Kalkarindji is probably fully sealed by now, they were in the final stages a few years back. From Kalkarindji to Halls was unsealed but no drama.

Last time we drove it, it was one of the most corrugated roads we have driven the whole way to Top Springs

We drove out from Halls Creek as far as Kalkarindji (Before driving north through Gregory NP) a year or two back & the road was in excellent condition, hardly any corrugations, but I guess we got lucky. We towed our Tvan, but it would have been fine for a larger van. Of course conditions can change very quickly so what we experienced is not of much help other than to let you know it is possible for it to be OK

That said I think I would want more recent info & that may be hard to get unless someone has been along there in the past few weeks. It isn't just corrugations you may have to contend with. That whole area around Kakarindji was flooded by the same event which took the Fitzroy Crossing out.. Kalkarindji was evacuated. I very much doubt that repairs down there have been given the same sort of priority as Fitzroy Crossing received, so it is possible there could still be road damage still to be repaired??

Perhaps enquiring at the Daly River Pub or the Police Station at Kalkarindji or Halls Creek might be your best bet? Feedback here if you can find out anything would be appreciated I'm sure.

Top Springs should have a good idea to the condition of the Buntine road also have a look at the description of Buntine Highway in treks ,a good read .
You shouldn't have much problems with the Buchanan road to top springs from the stuart hwy keep in mind previous comments

Hi Frosty

We have a 2013 Goldstream 16'6" Panther Pop-Top. In 2023 we did the Gibb and had little problems except waiting for the road to open in the northern section due to high river levels. Much depends on when it is graded but lower tyre pressures and drive to conditions and the van will be fine.

Don't forget the lesser gorges in Lennard & Adcock. We just unhitched the van at the Gibb . Also Bell Gorge either staying at Silent Grove or Imintji. If you are going all that way take in as much as you can although 4 days is rushing it.

We travelled the Buntine & some of the Buchanan in 2016 and at that time we had no problems travelling with the van.

As an aside we have travelled along quite a few heavily corrugated 'roads' and the Goldstream has handled them with little issue.

Enjoy the trip

Graham
