So the news has it , the aussie auto assosiation and others want to have a travel tax for the distance you drive and the govt to cut back fuel tax. The heavier your vehicle and distance you drive the more fuel it uses and the more it damages the roads.
So if you are out bush doing dirt roads of any kind you still pay road tax ... and i imagine you tow big vans boats and trailers you could get even taxed then . Smile ur on seatbelt cam

Be a nightmare to enforce. Never been done before and would cost a fortune. Also a link to the new story would be great because without that it's just bullshit

The Australian Automotive Dealers Association is not a motoring organisation, it is a dealers organisation and the Southcoast Register is a small town news paper. Seems weird. I'd be more concerned if it was on a mainstream news channel

Doesn't NZ have a system like that?

It is bound to happen to tax the EV's.

What about the scores of E bikes and E scooters out there causing accidents and pushing up everyone's insurance costs and filling hospital emergency wards for free.
They are in every sense a motor vehicle.
They should be identifiable, endless vids from home security systems of arseholes riding silently around people's property looking for sellable stuff to steal. Yet another very powerful tool for criminals.

Yes, in NZ it’s user pays. Rego and road tax all paid for by fuel excise. Primary producers get a better deal on their diesel. Perfect sliding scale. Don’t want to pay too much, don’t drive a lot and get a fuel efficient car.

So 4wd's must be getting up around the weight of a semi to cause road damage if not what idiot could prove they cause damage.
Poorly prepared roads that are commonly built in Aus need to be addressed before other garbage.

All vehicles cause "damage" to the roads. They do it in some sort of relativity to thedir size. Many years back, I remember an engineer stating that 40 Mini Minors have the same effect as one 5 ton truck.

That's because they don't care about building roads properly they rush cut corners then spend the next 20yrs repairing it. Back in the 80's and 90's they couldn't even build a decent free way between Newcastle and Sydney they were doing massive repairs in no time.
They still run cars and trucks on some of the old cobbled stone roads in the UK that were designed for horse and carts go figure.

Quote @Batt's "That's because they don't care about building roads properly they rush cut corners then spend the next 20yrs repairing it. "

That is for sure, only have to look at the new sections of the Great Northern Hwy recently been constructed around New Norcia, potholes and slumping already. Probably not helped by the huge number of massive oversize loads using it.
