Hmm, not much help coming so will see if I can help from my experience with my car, not a Prado.
My head unit has 2 USB ports. The first is a standard USB-A and the second is a USB-C
I plug my Carlinkit into the USB-A port and the head unit will connect to it but does not connect when I try the USB-C although I can use this port for my music collection.
The main reason for going the Carlinkit is that I can set up my music and apps onto it without the need for my phone being with me.
Hope this helps.

That's interesting Kazza.
My Head Unit won't connect to the Carlinkit box unless my iphone is within bluetooth range.

I must admit that it was very hard to work out how they worked and I finally took a gamble and Carlinkit CPC200.
I specifically wanted it to be able to use the apps for music, navigation etc of my choosing regardless of what is on my phone. This way if my wife uses the car she has the same setup as what have.
Basically the headunits in most cars are restricted to what the manufacturer installed. My HU has a good navigation app but even though I have 5 years free updates, nobody can tell me how to load them.
Using the Carlinkit allows me to run my own preferred app.
