I enjoyed reading of your travels through some of my favourite places, esp Noccundra. If you didn't visit Searle's Outback Store in Winton and meet old Bernie then you missed the highlight. As per out recent exchange in another thread, how did you find the section of road between the GCR and Bundabiddy Rockhole? It wasn't entirely clear to me from reading your blog.

Cuppa posted a pic of a sandy patch.
In 2003 :) we found the road from the GCR to the turn off to Tjukurla all pretty good. More traffic now than then though, so add some corrugations.

We actually drove into the community to meet a couple of people by prior arrangement. Nice community.

We also drove to the top of the Sir Frederick Range further north.
That was steep and a bit boney :)

Typical road condition.... sometimes more corrugated, sometimes deeper sand, but the locals were driving it in 2WDs

Then further north again we camped a night at the base of the Davenport Range and walked to the top for the views..

A great drive. To be recommended.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Peter, very helpful. I guess my question to Cuppa was how typical of that section of the SBR was that picture? I expect to be travelling in a convoy of Karavans and if I propose this diversion then I want to have a good idea of what I am proposing.

All the way to the Gary Junction Road, or just to the Bungabiddy Rock hole?
The level of maintenance north of the Tjukurla turn off is clearly less than the south section, but that may or may not mean it is worse to drive.
You will notice on the maps that there is a section that wanders about a fair bit just before crossing the border. That is through dune country and the sand is softer and deeper and may need significantly lower pressures all round, but as I said, the locals get through in 2WDs and Coasters and the like so you should be fine with care.
Cheers,
Peter

Only to the rockhole. As mentioned a recent GCR thread, our convoy is doing the GCR E2W and the road to the rockhole was mentioned as a small diversion to a good campsite.

Briste, there are a few sandy stretches like that between the GCR & Bungabiddy , some dual lane! More however was rocky gravel & corrugated. The track into Bungabiddy just has a single sign by the side of the road saying 'Rockhole; & the track in quite narrow & rocky in places, The camping area is quite small if you remain on the track, & if camping off the track it's worth walking first to check for boulders hidden by the grass. It's a great spot, but for us the flies were insane despite some very gusty winds. Both flies & wind settled down in the evening allowing us to have a pleasant camp fire, which had they remained could not have been a consideration.

Thanks Cuppa. Your report suggests to me that it may not really be suitable for a small group, all towing a KK.
