Skull Creek road and on to Running Waters etc

The last time we went to Running Waters, Skull Springs and Carowine Gorge was ~25 years ago.

Was an "expedition" and a thoroughly enjoyed experience, towing a camper trailer.

There was no Rippon Hills road and Carawine and Upper Carawine access was a challenge, out over the ranges, along the desert towards Warrawagine and then onto the Woodie Woodie road etc.

Fast forward to now. We have got older ?? and towing an offroad caravan with well equipped Landcruiser.

So, my query is can we do the loop out past Skull Springs, Running Waters across the river upstream from Carawine and then left to Carawine or if not what are the current road conditions and route recommendations to re visit our old favourites.

Planning on ~2 weeks from now

Yep you sure can. Like you we first did it 20+ years ago but went back a few years ago - it was still rugged and remote until Carrawine which is well known and popular with tar access via Marble bar to the entry track.

G'day

I won't go into a lengthy reply, but if you have time to watch a couple of YouTube video's they may answer your questions and possibly give you a very clear idea of what may be ahead in regards to travelling the Skull Springs road and access into Running waters and Carawine Gorge in the East Pilbara.

Search YouTube ... ExploreOz **This ExploreOz channel is not Michelle and David's EO site **

Deep in the Pilbara

It is a lengthy 44.02 minute video.

Skull Springs Rd. Nullagine to Carawine Gorge.

11.45 minutes of video.

East Pilbara roads.
Skull Springs road west of Nullagine is currently closed (last update 12/6/25).
Rippon Hills road is bitumen but it has had a tough time recently.
The road via Warrawagine is private.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Phil. I appreciate firsthand knowledge. We plan on getting there mid next week hopefully.

At the moment we are filling in time south of Newman waiting on 2 items to arrive in Newman.!

As usual Australia Post told lies about the "express post" delivery time. It went from the 16th when the item was lodged a week ago to now the 23rd as of this morning. I expected that as we live rural and Australia Post have always been a joke to us

The other item from Border Express explicitly told the sender verbally it would be 6 days and once again, once posted that went to 17 days. So, in theory both are now the 23rd.

Unfortunately, I need both items as they are replacing out of action items

Might see you there perhaps

Graeme

This is quite bizarre, but make of it what you will.....
I just spoke to the Shire office. They are adamant that the Skull Springs road is CLOSED and the web site is correct. There is a grader working on it now. BUT there is no sign saying it is closed, because they have run out of signs. :) :) :)

First travelled Skull Springs Road in 2017. Eight years ago this week to be precise.
This sign at eastern end was 110 percent accurate!
Went back four years ago and it was almost an outback highway.
Wish I was back there. A great part of the Pilbara.

Hi bungarra,
i have driven the track from Skull springs rd through upper carawine out to Rippon hills rd numerous times,
from Skull springs to upper carawine is no issue, the last time (2023) the track from upper carawine to Rippon hills rd had some decent washouts on creeks, depending on your approach / departure angles on your van, may have issues, cheers,
Chester.

More fuel for the fire ...

Mary, the Nullagine caravan park caretaker and "35 year council employee" says "it's open !" ??

The road out to the airport was closed before the five mile after the recent floods, but the Cajuput creek crossing was graded long ago and now has it's corrugations back due to plenty of traffic.

Note that Carawine Gorge is private property, on Warrawagine Station.
They have generously allowed people to camp there for many years.
Please take care of it and remove all of your rubbish.

This was just after a cyclone that smashed a lot of big trees along the camping area. It looks better now.
Cheers,
Peter

I understand that. We made contact with them many years ago, long before Rippon Hills road. Have been in contact each time we went back. In the early years.

Went back after the cyclone smashed it. Have photos somewhere of us driving though country with sphinx standing in 1m deep water.
Lyall and Robin are good people.

We've driven the road through Warrawagine Station a few times but always ring first to ask if it's OK. Haven't done it for a couple of years but will do soon hopefully.
First time I went to Carawine Gorge was from Telfer when I worked there back in '81- 82. Lots of trees there then before the big cyclone which destroyed many. No Rippon Hills Rd either from memory.
Enjoy the trip.
AlanTH.

PS. Turn right at the bottom of the air strip as going straight on leads into a large gravel area which has caught a few people stuck up to the floor. :)
