Hi all, my HEMA HN7 no longer wants to play ball so I'm in the market for a new GPS that will allow me to still do the same functions as my now defunct HN7. Any suggestions and or recommendations?
thanks

Why not just use your smart phone or a Samsung Tablet either of which you can get dash mounts. Both the phone and tablets can be loaded up with you favourite navigation app.

Hi Dunc. Source a second hand 8" Samsung from Cash Converters or similar, download OziEx for Android from Des
Newman Ozi, 'borrow' some maps from people you know, and plonk the tablet on a RAM windscreen mount. About $400-500 all up - no way I'd go Hema - too many very ordinary reviews for my liking. Alternatively you could install EO Traveller but you'd be limited to the EO map alone. Cheers. JB.

Hi John I have a Tablet already loaded with Ozi. Looking for a stand alone unit like my old HN7, the new version of HEMA's Ozi does not appeal to me at all.

Dunc, I don't understand what you are saying. :)
My tablet is just as "stand alone" as my HN7 was, except it was a fraction of the price.
And there is no connection between HEMA and OziExplorer. 2 different unconnected companies. But you can use all your old HEMA maps on the tablet with OziExplorer Android (which is designed for mobile navigation and is much different to the (full version) OziExplorer on your lap top.
I find OziExplorer Android much easier to use on the road than the HEMA was. And the Navigator gets along with it fine too. She never did get along with the HEMA.
Cheers,
Peter

I've been looking at
Samsung rugged devices. Not too crazy expensive. I wonder if their heat tolerance is better than regular tablets and phones? I've never read any work or play reports about them. My only experience was from work where the techs used Panasonic rugged PC's for servicing and downloading from instruments.

I have been a HEMA user for decades. When the HN7 died I decided "no more".
I bought a Panasonic Toughbook FZ-G1 10" a couple of years back. I installed a full copy of OziExplorer on it and it worked fine, but while it is great for a laptop, is not great for mobile nav.
So I bought a 10" Lenovo tablet from Aldi for $199 and installed OziExplorer Android on it for $32 and loaded all my HEMA and other maps collection on it.
I absolutely love it.
Bought a second Levono for the navigator. She uses it differently from me. I use
mine in portrait with the oddometers and she uses hers in landscape.
The 2 tablets have been 100% reliable for a couple of years now, including a couple of Canning trips and the Anne Beadell. The mount is DIY.

Lenovo 10" tablet
Still have the Panasonic (in
Adelaide) if anyone wants one.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter, I have a Samsung Tablet loaded with OziExplorer Android already, but that is large and bulky. Yes I know I can get a smaller tablet and mount it on a RAM or similar. Looking for options wrt stand alone units similar to the HEMA, but definitely not the new HEMA.

When I needed to retire my Lenovo gen 1 8" tablet, I went looking for another 8" tablet with sufficient processing power to run EOTraveller. In 2020, such a beast didn't exist and I ended up with a Samsung Galaxy S9 Lite which I think comes in at ~10.4". I was interested to see that Samsung now make a decent 8" device in their rugged series hence the link.
EDIT: just tried to follow through the link and discovered that there is now no 8" version. I guess it is product refresh time and it has been deleted.

Thanks for the link. Unless I missed something to use all the functions available you need to be online? Obviously, unless within mobile range online functionality is severely compromised. So will this unit give me full off-line functionality with OziExplorer and Traveller?

Hi Duncan, you need to be online to install the app software, content and maps - after that you have full gps mapping and tracking functionality. More information - see
ExplorOz Traveller full documentation.

I use a 10 inch samsung tablet. I have it mounted so the top is just level with the top of the dash. I,ve found the lower mounted units require more time off the road and generally only an 8 inch screen. The samsung like all phones and tablets do not like direct sunlight as they get far too hot and the battery will swell and potentially explode. I have a cover over the top.
Mine is in a Pajero and fits
well with
my home made bracket. My original Hema unit I found as too small and it crapped itself after 15 months anyway...hence the move to samsung tablet.

Samsung tablets have survived 11 years of full-time travel in our motorhome.
Current version is a Samsung A9 plus.
Edit: Velcro attached to glovebox.

The upside of using a tablet for the navigation is you get to use the tablet for all your other uses . unlike Hema stand alone navigation units , IMO

Honestly who would trust Hema again after their dismal performance in making their products supportable and reliable in the past few years? Get yourself a nice Tablet and mounting solution for it and run
ExplorOz Traveller.

I've only ever bought one Hema Navigator, an HX1 back in 2017. It has been replaced twice, once free of charge & once for a $90 refurb fee (but was a complete new unit).
The latter, the refurbed one, I've been using since 2021. The Hema online catastrophe was/is irrelevant to me as I never used it.
What to do when it inevitably dies one day. I'm not sure. Currently my wife & I still prefer to use it in conjunction with a dash mounted ipad &
Exploroz Traveller, but EOT has some small idiosynchrasies (just as all GPS navigators have - none are perfect.... are they? ) which means I don't wish to rely on EOT alone.
Oziexplorer is not Mac friendly so if I were to go that way (& there are good reasons to do so) I would have to get a Windows computer, (with associated learning curve) something I swore many years ago I would never do. There is no software for Mac to enable maps to be converted for Oziexplorer use that I am aware of.
So when my HX1 dies, I will face a dilemma in what to replace it with. Like many, the Hema shenanigans have not helped my trust in their product, & I still feel miffed about an update to the old Hema 4x4 app several years ago when they removed some of the useful larger scale maps.
Has anyone tried the (somewhat expensive) Garmin option? ie 'Tread' or 'Tread Overland'?

Cheer up Cuppa. You may die before your HX1 does. lol
And at nearly $2k the Garmin Overland would need to be good wouldn't it?
