New Cooper Creek Barge

As many may be aware, I had a lot to do with the 2010 and 2011 Cooper Creek Floods and I had direct contact with Government officials for the latest details.

Well this year is no different and back in March I was again in contact with Government Officials and given privileged details that were only seen in one other place, and not media releases.

The new Barge is not free, $25 for car up to Coaster Bus size, $10 for motorbikes, Trailers and campers $15 and $750 for road trains......one way pricing.

When the barge was officially open, it was operating 24/7, but as from the 5 December will be operating from 7am to 5.30pm 7 days a week and closed for half a day for maintenance.

There is still around 3 kilometres of water over the Birdsville Track, so until this water has dryed out, the stability of the road checked, the new barge will continue to operate to into next year.

The Barge is massive, constructed to take the largest cattle trucks and even dwarfs the River Murray ferries here in South Australia. I unfortunately had other commitments for the official launch, but made the trip days after seeing I personally had a lot to do with it.

Before heading up, contacted another one of my contacts for permission to camp out on the Cooper, but his simple words were, I have a better place this time Stephen and had the best ever camp on the banks of Lake Killamperpunna and around 5 kilometres as the crow flys from the barge site.

Hi Barry

Any smart comments and I will be on the phone to Michelle, as in the past I have been criticised by a number of members here that think they knew what was happening with the new barge and honestly they have no idea.

Cheers

Great photos thanks for sharing. Must be quite a feeling to get back there and see this project completed for yourself. Is the camp on the lake private or can others stop there? Pop some details into the place if there is a way to seek permission etc.

The camp was just brilliant, but on private pastoral land and permission must first be obtained from the Station.

Sorry Stephen, can I just confirm that the station would be Dulkaninna Station? Just wondering who to contact - I can do the research and put in the camp if that's to their wishes but not sure if that's the station to contact or another?

The Station is the next station north, Etadunna Station

They take in all the land north and south and including the Cooper Creek area, as well as to the east and west, massive area.

Stephen, it appears you have a lot to answer for.
You weren't responsible for the English cricket team were you.

Stephen,

Your information and knowledge of this and other areas of our magnificent outback is amazing. The Birdsville Track is on my list. Thanks for sharing.

We are no strangers of the Birdsville Track, having driven it for a number of decades.

My advise for anyone travelling it is do as much research as you can, there is so much history along the drive.

Yes you can drive from Marree to Birdsville in one long day of driving, but stop to smell the roses as such, and as a bare minimum at least 2 days to enjoy the drive.

If the track is wet or raining, just do not head out on it, it will become your worst nightmare. One of our trips it was raining, the local Police at Marree said he did not have the power to close the track, don't stop and get as far north as you can……

Eight and a half hours later, a drive that usually takes us around two and half hours, we finally slid into Mungerannie and next morning, the whole Birdsville Track was officially closed and spent the next 3 days exploring Mungerannie on foot.

Cheers

Stephen

Thanks Stephen.

There has been some recent commentary about how forums change.
To best of my knowledge you have been here since well before I started looking around 20 years ago.
Place sure has changed since.
But you have been a constant source of information and good advice for me.
Your trip reports and photographs over the years have taken me to places I am likely never to get to.
Thanks for all of it.
