How many days we need to do the
Gibb River Road from
Derby to Kununura while seeing a few gorges on the way. Can we do it in three days?
Any suggestions for accomodation along the
Gibb River Rd ?

You could but you wouldn't get to see much. I recommend you double it & stay overnight at some of the georges on the way.

Your not listening mcboom. I don't know what the big hurry is but you will miss 90% of the Kimberly if you just charge up the middle. I spent 6 weeks there, still didn't see everything & can't wait to get back to see more at another time in the seasons. Try drinking decaf and enjoy the ride of life.
The only accomodation I would Ok (besides that up at Kooljamin that I already told you about) is the eco huts at Old Mornington
camp, the turnoff is just after
Imintji. They run a good show down there but take time to go out to
Sir John gorge or Diamond Gorge (you wont do them both justice in one day) otherwise it's a waste of time going there.
If you got plent of spare cash visit ElQuestro, they are pretty touristy but do it in great style if thats your bag.
The rest of the 3 days will be spent driving and hoping you don't rip a tyre apart on the GRR.
If you don't want to listen to what they are telling you on this
forum try calling the tourist office in
Derby, maybe they'll have what you are looking for.

Hi mcboom,
If three days really is all you can spare I would recommend that you take the bitumen.... It only takes a day to get from
Derby to
Kununurra that way and you still have two days left over to go have a look at
Windjana Gorge,
Tunnel Creek, or
Bell Gorge at the
Derby end or The
El Questro gorges at the
Kununurra end....
Most of the gorges are a fair hike in on foot (1-2 hours) and there is so much to explore at each of them that a day per location doesn't really do it justice. When I am pushed for time I prefer to see one or two
places properly than drive past half a dozen.... If however you enjoy the "15 countries in 12 days" type of european tour, don't let me put you off!
We just spent 12 days doing the same trip and I thought that was rushed.....
Sorry - can't help with the accomodation suggestions, unless you want to
camp....

just came back 4 weeks ago after spending two & a half weeks there. It was just enough time to have a look around an area that deserves alot more time. Six weeks would be great, but we have to get back to work to pay for these trips.
If you plan to do it in three days just use the Great Northern Highway because you wont get to see much on the GRR in that time.

I'm not quite sure what you have planned to see, you must have a decent map and a couple of tourist brochures and these must give you some ideas for planning. Do you aim to spend any time around
Kununurra or is it just a flying visit?
You could do the GIBB in a couple of days comfortably on your way to
Kununurra but see very little of the gorges or any of
the rock art and sites of significance. We live in
Kununurra and it is easy to just spend a day at
Emma Gorge,
El Questro Gorge,
Zebedee Springs and the
Pentecost River and all these spots are within a 2 hour drive from town.
As for accomodation, whats wrong with a tent?
