Does anyone know if the standard radio in the GU series III ST has a mute wire ?
I have a nokia hands free kit that has the ability to connect to the car radio so the radio is muted automatically if a mobile phone call is made/received. I have it wired correctly (and working
well) in my Commodore VT, and would like to get it working on the Patrol.
Before I pull the dash/radio out, I thought I would ask.

Most new vehicles (post early 90's) have a plug somewhere behind a panel that will have all the wires you are after. Just a matter of finding it. A Nissan service centre should be able to tell you where it is. Might not want to tell you though.

Hi DeanoNSW,
I just had a phone kit installed a few weeks ago. The GU doesn't have an auto mute, so the phone was wired up to the acc power that feeds the radio (not the permanent power). It works fine and I was very happy with the instal.
Cheers

Sorry, should have added it that the phone auto mute (+12V) was wired to a relay that switched OFF the acc power to the radio.

Hi Captain,
where abouts did you have the phone handset mounted? I am getting my CDMA phone today (Motorola T730) and it comes with an external antenna car kit.

Hi Bryan,
I had the mounting kit placed on the RHS of the centre dash area, approximately level with the radio. The top of the phone is just below the sub
tank switch. This position enables me to be able to glance at the screen easily (see who's calling) compared to some of the alternatives.
As for the antenae, it bolts onto the roo bar where the (single) mounting point is. I simply made a bracket from 25x6mm flat bar and drilled three holes. The centre hole bolts it to the roo bar bracket while the UHF and phone aerials are in the other two. Be aware that "stick-on" windscreen antenaes do not give anywhere near the range like a proper "broomstick" one.
Cheers
Captain

I fitted my handset on the LHS of the console in line with the hi/Low range lever, fits in neatly. Hid the speaker in under the console, just poked it in thru the ashtray hole, and ran the antenna up thru the passenger side pillar, really easy install amazed myself it was so easy., will have to find the mute lead and connect it up like yours Captain.
thanx for the info

Thanks captain,
I my car kit comes with the window mount antenna (i'll have to check the db rating of the antenna). but it does appear to be a decent one, and not be just a short 1db gain antenna...
Do you find the car creates a shadow effect by having the antenna on the bull bar? or is it not an issue?
thanks for the info.
regards
Bryan..

Hi Bryan,
I have never noticed any shadow effect, but thats not to say it doesn't exist. I find the bullbar the most pratical mount. As for the antenae, I have a Benelec 5.2dbi and it has excellent performance.
Cheers

Thanks Captain,
I will chase up the benelec antenna to get an idea of price.. and look at making a similar bracket, as I have my UHF antenna on the left hand antenna base also, dont really want to put an antenna on the right hand side base...
Do you find there is enough space between your leg and the phone having it mounted on the rhs? there isnt alot of space with the GQ...
Any chance of a photo?? if possible can you please email it to ccie3106 at iinet.net.au
thanks very much

Bryan

Thanks for you help. Great idea with the relay. I will look at doing similar myself.
I have mounted my phone on the console next to the drivers left foot. I only had to drill two holes and it looks very neat and tidy.

Deano

Hi Peoples
I just had a Sony-Ericcson Z-600 installed in the GU. The radio mutes
well(don't ask me how, but my installer is a genius anyway). He had a special Patrol mobile phone mount flown down from
Sydney. This mount clips in between the LHS of the radio and the edge lip of the glovebox. Looks sensational and it is now at a great height (I don't have the passenger air-bag otherwise he would not have mounted it there)
I don't know the brand but if you really need to know I will find out for you. Just drop me a line.
