The FJ40 would not hold a candle to any Rangie on or off road. If you are asking this question I doubt you understand the engineering in a Range Rover and remeber that L-R had long travel coils and constant 4WD since 1974. The Rangie has always been the std by which other fourbies are judged, the only problem is the small matter of quality and reliability which Land Rover has never got right to this day (Ford will fix that with another billion dollars or so).

Older Rangies are fun, easy to fix and comfortable bush machines. If you have been fixing your FJ40 yourself then you will have no problem with the Rangie ... it's just different. Your should be able to get all your parts relatively cheaply without ever going near a Land Rover dealer.

Suggest you join your local LROC as there will be members there who are helpful and have a mine of knowledge.

Ive got it - and no doubt paid too much - without checking it out so thoroughly- so it'll no doubt end up a lemon, but I amtaking it up to the Watagans Olney national park for a crack down the trails my forty eat up and see what she does.
I had always liked landys and rangies but over here people seem to take the bleep out of anything not toyota, and as you say they dont quite have the same reputation for build quality.
That said she is a lovely drive, seems to have oodles of power and once I take off the front plastic bumper (its got a bar) she'll have a decent enough approach angle

Guess better change my tag to Josh on the Range or somtin - will giv eit some thought.

Anyh ideas on things to do to it its got a snorkle and a decent bar front and back - any general things to watch out for on them ?

will report back with verdict on the off road ability

anyone wanna by a 40 ?

I think a little steep in anyones books Eric, you can put a add in Sydney pappers to meet at such and such a place with your RR,s check em all out, and pick up a good one for less than $3000 cash and drive it home.

What yr model, and what engine?

And a stock rangie would eat a stocky 40 in every aspect, comfort, ability, and power.

www.redbook.com.au will give you an idea on price, but you do see heaps of em cheaper than $9k, but depends on model, and stuff.

When you say diffs, do you mean lockers?

And 3yr warranty - on what? Is this from a caryard?
