I have seen a couple of old posts mentioning a shower from Kmart driven by D-cell Batteries. Does anyone know if you can still get a camp shower like this? I have tried my local Kmart and they didn't know what I was talking about.

Our other option is a 12v cigarette lighter version, but didn't want to have to shower next to the car. Can anyone recommend a decent brand that has a really long 12v lead? Can't afford the top of the range showers that heat the water too, although the new ones look really good.

Thanks in advance.

We purchased the $30.00 unit (Yellow in Colour) from Supa Cheap
I cant really recommend this as it simply doesnt pump enough water unless you raise the Bucket it sucks from to reduce the Head.
Was with some friends at Double Island Point and they had the Battery unit you mentioned but it suffered from the same problem
I suggest you try the camping stores but I think you cant beat the Canvass Bag type on a rope and pully with screww shower head for convenience and low cost.

Try this:
Get a knapsack sprayer (one of the metal ones - more capacity) ... pump it up and shower away. I had one and am scouring the shops now for a replacement as someone "souveneired" it last year on a trip. Worked fine - no batteries - just had to heat the water.
Beauty of it was you kept it all in the "pop up" shower room we use, and if pressure decreases you just give it a few pumps and you are away again. It's not "high flow" but it is wet, inexpensive and not dependent on anything other than a bit of elbow grease to keep it going.
Canvas bags with a shower rose are pretty good as well.

For portability , get a cheap power tank from Supercheap.

For about $50 , run your shower where ever , and plug some 12v lights in . . . sweet as.

Have used the K-mart one and it worked for the first 2 trips and died.
The yellow 12 volt ones work but we are on our 4 one as the switch keeps going and we keep taking them back.
Last trip we resorted to the old style army canvas bucket with rose. Still the best method, BUT you can never find a tree branch where you want it.

My kmart one, the impeller fell off, you would think if they went to all that trouble making the bloody thing, they would use a splined or square shaft to mount the impeller..

Interesting tips from everyone - Thank you.

How well do the solar showers heat the water? I mean if it's an overcast day will it still heat ok or do you need full sun? Also has anyone come up with an alternative to a tree if there aren't any suitable ones around (might not be where we are going). Maybe some sort of tent pole rig?

Hadn't thought of using a knapsack sprayer before - might just have to look into that.

Thanks again everyone for your tips in my quest for the ideal shower setup!

Hi kooka,

There is certainly a battery powered shower available from Coleman.
They a very good for a budget level device and should be available from most good Camping Outlets.

Tried the yellow shower from supercheap. Tested it at home before we left and found it worked O.K. First shower on a weekend trip and it failed to pump any water. Went back to solar shower for the weekend. Decided a replacement would also fail so we invested in a 12v bilge pump. Discarded the yellow pump, kept the shower head, flex tubing and bag, and installed the bilge pump. After 12 months and about 10 camping trips no failures. Plenty of flow and pressure available from a 30 gal per Hr pump.

Regards

Paul

We have used the shower from Kmart for about 3 yrs now ( son gave it to us ) , works a treat.....we put bearable hot water in a black bin which is big enough to stand in ....put the pump in , switch on and shower for as long as we like or till water starts getting cold as water just recirculates...have replaced the batteries once...just great...

We bought the cheap yellow one from Supa Cheap actually we got 2, one half price as it was suppose to be broken but worked fine. What we did before using it was pull the motor apart and reseal it all with silicone so the water doesn't get into the motor. We carry a small motorbike battery which is plugged into a charger while travelling, at camp you can set your shower up anywhere. We have been using the same on for over 2 years now. Battery and shower get packed into a small plastic box all together which just lifts out and put it next to the shower screen.
