Colour or not

Hey guys,

We have the opportunity to buy a GPS at a really good price, the only thing is that we have to choose between colour or black&white. There is a $475 difference between the two, so my question is whether the difference with the colour screens is worth $475.

Thanks
Steve & Sandy

Steve,

I have a Garmin ETREX which is in 'black and white' and it suits me. I can not see the value in the difference; however, that will depend on how often you are going to use it. IMHO with a small screen and colour it may get a bit crowed.

unless the colour one has huge memory,a nd you are planning on using satellite or air photos as base maps, where will be little use of a colour screen. AND, you can always hook up the GPS to a computer for trip planning, etc. I would save the $475. What do you want to use it for?

you havnt mentioned brands / models. usually I would have thought colour gps would be top of the range like garmin 960 so ould come with more features than my etrex or even an emap etc. straight colour would not make it worth $475 more so it would be up to you to decide what features you need/want and buy accordingly

Well I am not sure on models you are talking about but I saw a write up on the new Garmin somewhere. I am ffffffffffairly sure that the only difference between the two was the screen (one colour the other mono). I could think of some much better things to spend $475 on than a colour screen.

Sorry, should have said we're choosing between the Magellan Colour or Gold Travellers pack. We mainly want it for general travelling and 4wding.

Thanks guys for all the feedback, we were already leaning towards the cheaper option, looks like that might be the way to go!!

Thanks again

Steve and Sandy,

Thought I'd throw a little spanner in the works for you.

If you are looking towards the top end of the scale, I can recommend the Platinum version of the Meridian GPS'sss.

These have the added advantage of a three axis Compass (unit not affected by angle) and also a Barometer and Thermometer (which I don't use) if you are into Weather forcasting.

Steve.

If you intend using it from its own batteries (hiking ect) check battery life of colour v B&W.

Steve,
check prices on this site or at GPSOZ. Magellan prices have come down several hundred dollars recently. I am guessing you mean the Meridian Colour? If you use the GPS as a stand alone unit the colour is nice but ? worth the $475. If you plug into a computer then a low res monochrome screen will suffice and the Magellan 315 at $250 will do. The Meridian Colour is listed at $940, the Sportrak Colour at $899. But as pointed out above you can buy on eBay for $300 USD.

Just when we decide one way!!!! Something comes up to make you question your decision.

Well we're getting the Magellan Gold (non-colour) GPS, hopefully we'll be happy with it, and for all those who have followed this post out of interest, we have two trips coming up and we'll let you know what we thought when we get back.

Thanks again for all the feedback,

Sandy and Steve

Mate, just to throw in another spanner and doubt in your mind, I have the Magellan Gold and it's a great little unit. I chose it over the Platinum because I didn't need the barometer etc, but I considered getting the Colour. I didn't get it because of the cost. Now I wish I had of out laid the extra dollars and got the Magellan Colour.
Reason is, depending on what scale you are vieing the screen at, track, creeks and roads appear the same, it would just make it that little bit easier to navigate. Again what ever of the two units you decide on getting for your own reasons, I don't think you will be disappointed.
Cheers
Shawn
