Hi

My wife and I are considering xing the Simpson west-east. My usual travelling companion may not be able to get hols and I'm wondering if anybody else is xing it in October this year. I'm going from Adelaide and will be at Springs on the 18th or thereabouts.

Needn't be an all-the-way-for-the-whole-trip-hand-holding excercise but to have that security of knowing where someone else is (I'll have UHF) that may be able to help in a real emergency could be a good idea.

I try to be totally self sufficient but if someone else is planning to make a 'lone' xing at that time and is of similar mind please email me.

When u get to Mount Dare or Purnie Bore there is sure to be a heap of people doing exactly what u are up to !!! Recommend you get there and join a few from there !! you can choose if you want to go or not with whoever u meet !! Getting 'set up' before you get there has in my experience been worse than that trip itself.... we ended up doing the trip East to West on our own as the 'others' were even less prepared than we were !! It gets pretty warm around that time of year .. remember ..

Yeah, good advice there.
If you want to do it on your lonesome, lots do, maybe just upgrade the communications gear a bit (hire a sat. phone or similar) and have phone nos for contacts at either end of the SD. One of course should be competent in sand driving.

Amen George to the above - it could be really warm up there in October. David Cox at Mt Dare homestead would be a good contact for advice.....numbers on www.vks737.on.net site.............roads page / SA section. I'm biased, being with VKS737 and a volunteer, but HF or Satphone hire as a minimum is the go for one-off solo travellers in my view - we had a member break down out there last year on a secondary track - without the long distance comms, could have been very sticky. He was concerned even with the HF at hand !

George,
did trip solo in April -wesy to east
you can hire a sat phone at Mt Dare and drop it off at Birdsville cop shop.
Cheapest insurance you can get. . only cost 3 days phone hire.less than $80.Talk to David at mt dare.

Hi all

Thanks very much for the all informative replies.

Howard- I've booked a Sat phone from Mt Dare - great idea - thanks!

Al - We'll be in a green Triton dual cab with canopy - should be at Dalhousie/Mt Dare on or about the 21 or 22 October.

Kind regards

George
