Can anyone inform me on the pros and cons of spending the night at Cohen on the way up to the cape. Would you recommend it, or move on?.
Want a safe place.

Plenty of camping along the river on the northern outskirts. Quite popular so safety not really an issue, but that's the case more or less everywhere.
The locals at Coen seemed to have a little more attitude than elsewhere, but certainly not over the top.

Archer R to the north is arguable better and Musgrave to the south a very friendly place.

Cheers

Don't know if it legal or not but the kids had a great time catching shrimp out of the river after some bread was thrown in. They cooked them up and we all had a couple each. Camp just out of town as others above have suggested.

I'd keep going to the Archer River Roadhouse. The camping there is great. Decent food and no attitude. You also get to see a lot of people dragging in their broken trailers and cars. Much more exciting than the sexchange hotel experience... Some of us would not even get out of our cars at Coen

I've stayed in the CP at Cohen and also on the river bend. Worst hassle in Cohen was a group of oldies on a tour to the tip. We'd just driven up from Cairns so wanted to get some kip. They were having a sing song, pre ww2 which was ok except one guy kept singing "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" over the top of them, no matter what they were singing. Met him later, running up the rocks at the Tip. I asked the driver how he did it and he said "I dunno...but I wish he wouldn't" He must of been 75 and had more energy than both of us put together!
Apart from asking the tourists for money and drinks the locals have always seemed Ok to me. They can hassle you a lot worse in other communities. But I wouldn't like a heap of screaming drongos camping in my backyard either :))
Bend 12k out was more peaceful and no lights to spoil the starwatching.
Camped at Archer and Musgrove. Great stops, especially the bar and movies at Musgrove where we camped almost on the airstrip.
Archer is renowned for a top spot and great food.
You should be Ok no matter where you stay. Some folks prefer to bushcamp just off the road side. Not sure why with all the traffic and dust but no accounting for taste.
I have only one complaint about The Cape. It keeps me coming back again and again.
No matter where you stay have a great time.
Cheers
Jim
