An old farmer out in the sticks had suffered from the past few years of drought; most of his sheep had died, he had no money, overdraft way over the limit and the bank threatening to foreclose. He'd tried selling up, but no-one wanted to buy during a drought.

An oil company rep. came around and asked if they could dig for oil - he'd get generous royalties if they found oil; $500 even if they didn't. He jumped at the chance. They put down a test bore, down and down, down to 500 metres, but didn't strike oil - so they gave him $500.

Not enough to help his dilemma - but he thought at least he could treat himself to a new dunny - and save himself digging a new hole every few weeks. So he got some new tin and built a beaut new dunny right over the bore hole.

As luck would have it, a couple of city slickers came with an interest in buying his farm. After a while the gent needed to use the new convenience. Half an hour went by, and he still didn't come out, by which time his wife was getting rather agitated, so they went over and called to him. When he didn't reply, urged on by the anxious wife, the farmer kicked in the new dunny door, and there the man was, sitting on the seat stone dead.

Trying to console the wife, he said - so his weak heart final gave up. No she said - no heart troubles at all - had a medical last week and his heart was as strong as an ox. What can have caused him to die so suddenly? Did he have any strange toilet habits?

Well yes, replied the widow - he would always hold his breath until he heard the splash!

mother,

There used to be a long drop, at Vergemont Station, west of Longreach, that was built over an old well. Story goes that it was so deep, that you could finish the paper work, before you heard a splash!

Wouldn't have thought it could be that deep, but makes a good story...

Hooroo...
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.
