Guys,

I'm doing a Blue Mountains trip over the school holidays and will have a mate meeting us there.

I understand there is access to the park from the West, particularly from Emden Vale Rd - my mate will be coming from the South - is the same entry point on the West accessible from Fullerton Rd - or is that track (which joins Fullerton Rd and Emden Vale Rd) private property???

Ivan,
not 100% sure but i think the track you are talking about is on private property, we were there at easter and got a good mud map from national sparks and wildfires
(npws) the park was very dry and none of the rivers had any water although it is still a good park to visit

Ivan,

I have pulled the maps out and had a look. The NSW Parks and WildLife MAP shows the gate at the southern end of the park as a locked gate - This is near Silent Creek Camping Ground. There are two entrances from my memory, one west and the other from the north east. We went there on Aust Day this year and things were very dry. We came in from the West (but came from the north, not the south)

The Map you are after is Arkstone and Fullerton. If you head north on Fullerton Rd you will end up coming to a Y junction onto Jeremy Ck Rd. Head east for about 2.5 - 3 km where you need to head south onto the extension of Arkstone Road. You can get access to the park just past a homestead called Emden Vale. Access is via the Abercrombie Fire Trail that heads east, vicinity GR 420245 (on the Arkstone 25000:1 Map).

Re private property, yes I believe that a few of the tracks are private property, but I am sure if you remember to shut the gate and keep the speed down noone will mind.

POC for NPWS Kanangra Area Office - 02 6336 1972 or email at oberon@npws.nsw.gov.au.

Cheers

Deano

Silent Ck was bone dry. Abercrombie River was wet in places, but not flowing. This was back in Jan for Aust Day weekend, so I would imagine that its flowing now.

I had a look at the Bureau of Met site for the river levels, but the Abercrombie River is not list (not that I could see). You may have to ask the NPWS when you email them.

I would be interested to hear what they say, so if you get a chance, wack a post back on this thread to let me know how you go.

Cheers

Sorry - should read - checked the eyes and found the listing for the Abercrobie !!

I had a look at the Bureau of Met site for the river levels, the show the levels as 0.67m at Abercrombie and 0.82m at Hadley No 2 (not sure where these are.

Hi Deano - got this from the Abercrombie mob - thought you might be interested:

The trails that are most affected by rain are the basalt clad trails in the north -east of the park namley the Brass Walls trail, Little Bald Hill (impassable when even a bit wet due to the steepness of the trail) and the Link Rd. This means that it is not worth trying to enter the park from the Brass Walls entrance after rain. The trails take about a day or two to dry out, depending on the amount of sun etc.
The trails in the west are fine even after some rain (ofcourse a huge deluge will make the steep climbs slippery and trying to drive them will chew up the trails) The river crossings can also rise and make the crossings impassable but that hasn't happened for some time now!
Please remember that in accordance with the draft plan of management that there is a maximum limit of 8 vehicles per group (due to the narrow trails and steep slopes). The Silent Creek camping area offers large flat camping areas for the larger groups but most times there is no water flowing in the creek.
Please bring your own fire wood and use only the fire rings provided (do not form your own with rocks)
The Retreat River is flowing beautifully at the moment making The Sink the favourable camping spot. Abercrombie River is looking pitiful at the moment with only a few small stagnant water holes.
Please remind all your members to remain on the trails at all times and please keep off all trails after heavy rain. We have a very small budget and the large network of trails within the park require a lot of money for their upkeep.
Hope this helps you out,
Happy camping,
Jules

There are only two accesses into the park, one off the Oberon/Goulburn rd via Brass Walls fire trail and one on the western side past Emden Vale, comes in off Arkstone road which is reached from either the Oberon/Goulburn rd or Burraga.
The western entry is supposedly 2wd access to the Sink camping area but it can be steep and rough especially when wet.

Thanks Peter,

I was interested in the West entry point, but coming from the South (don't want to drive all the way around if I don't have to!!)

Any ideas??

If you are coming up from Goulburn along the Goulburn/Oberon rd then the Brass Walls access is the easiest and quickest, not a good idea if it is wet and you are by yourself thoughas the first k or so is pretty steep and can be very slippery/muddy. In wet conditions the best access is through Emden Vale.
There are only the two access points into the park, any others go through private property and are usually locked.
Alternatively you can go up through Crokwell and then across to the western entrance.
