Compatible diesel priming pump for Nissan TD27 engine?

Hi,

I've got a '98 Nissan Terrano II with the TD27 engine. I've been told I have a crack in the priming pump housing that's allowing air into the fuel system overnight, resulting in a rough start / stalling after start and excessive starter cranking to get the engine to fire in the mornings.

Does anybody know if the Nissan Navara or the imported Terrano (Pathfinder) diesel engines use the same priming pump? This would save a lot of hassle if I could fit the Navara part, since Terrano II's are pretty thin on the ground.

Cheers, Scott

Scott,

The Navara engine of that vintage is the same minus the electronic engine management, if the priming pump you are talking about is the one where the fuel filter screws on, then it is the same, even if you can't find one from a navara, you will be able to find one of a GQ or GU Patrol or any Nissan Diesel.
Failing that, contact any diesel people and they will be able to supply an after market one which would probably include the filter assembly.

How's this for a cheap alternative? The mob that installed the Chevvie 6.2 litre V8 diesel in my troopie pointed out an inline bulb pump, when I asked where the primer pump was.
It just looks like the bulb pumps that are fitted to portable outboard fuel tanks. Its been working fine for the 3 years I've had it. It would be easy to take a spare along for bush trips, it just fits into the fuel line before the Lucas filter.

Thanks for the replys guys. I'm quite hapy with the vehicle so far - it's my first fourby and I've only had it 18months. I've been a few rough places in Gove, and it's capabilities exceed my own - bog standard with Discoverer A/T's that are 1mm off being illegal, it still got through a mud hole that bogged a 60 series up to the chassis. I think that had more to do with picking a path than off road capability however!!

The only major disappointment was the failure of the airflow meter about 12 months ago -a costly little exercise to fix in Gove, I can tell you!!

Anyway, here's some pics of the offending part, and I'll have a squiz at some patrols in town to see how similar they are.

Cheers, Scott

The most common fault with this filter assembly is dirt or contamination trapped in the one way valve that is built into the filter head assembly, allowing fuel to drain back to the tank over night. Try blowing compressed air through the filter head (with filter removed) in the direction of fuel flow. Failing that non genuine filter assemblies are available from $110

Thanks for you advice Paul. The mechanic says that when they hook a clear line up to the return side of the pump, the diesel looks like lemonade it has so much air in it. So he reckons it's definitely cracked somewhere. Can you let me know where I can get one of those aftermarket lift pumps - preferably by mail order?

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone who responded - this forum is great!

Scott

I have a diesel 1HZ Troopy which I have just taken the original twin fuel filter sustem off of and replaced with twin CAV system.

After I completed it took me two days to get fuel into the first unit (seperator/agrometer).

Absolute nightmare which turned out to be a missing seal allowing it to leak air like a sieve.

Then I had all of you problems and some, which turned out to be seal problems in the second unit. Once again leaking air.

Then I had a steady stream of bubbles that I could see in the bottom glass area of the second unit which were affecting it to a lesser extent.

Once again it was a seal and a plastic drain tap/cock.

Now it is just ace and after a week and a half of absolute stress, frustration, mind numbing thought exhaustion etc etc I have become the most knowledgeable person on this earth in regards to that fuel system that is now on my Troopy.

I have been told it is all valuable experience that you can only learn by goingb through. Don't know about that.

Anyway its something for you to mull over.

Regards

Scott,

There is a mob in Engadine (Sydney) that sells diesel pump parts and replacement pumps etc. Not Nissan but they will have a Bosche or something similar that the Nissan is modelled on.

Reliable Diesel Exchange Injectors & Pumps
5 Mianga Ave Engadine NSW 2233
ph: (02) 9548 2380

Bought some gear there a few years back and they were very helpful. Prices were 25% of what Nissan quoted.

Thanks for all your replies everyone. I've ended up ordering a second hand unit from a mob over in WA. Postage takes a while up here, but I'll post again to let you know of the outcome when I've fitted it!
