Hi Everyone
We are currently looking at off road pop top caravans. We are now very confused as to which make and model will be the best for us. Each manufaturere says that their's is "The Best". Do any of you know of an independant comparison that has been done on the off road vans that are available on the market. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Chris

Have spent the last couple of months trying find out the same thing, plus the Bris.
&Syd shows.I'm a novice to vans, but have learnt a lot from places like this and the
Van magazines, who do not do comparison testing as far as I can see,not like the
motor mags. With offroad vans you get what you pay for. The offroad vans are
purpose built, usually to order, be a bit wary of normal vans with some offroad
road tyres and some checkerplate on the van. Because I had some definite
ideas for my van [I'm a single and intend to spend 6 to 9 months travelling Aus.
a lot will be Outback] I eventually settled on 2 Vans, Bushtraker, [Qld] & Trakmaster [Vic] I wanted a 14ft pop top with shower and toilet and double bed
and full solar powered .Bushtraker, who build great vans were a bit loath to build
a pop top, Trakmaster are building what I want,so that's where I ended up.
I booked my production spot almost 2 months ago for April 05 delivery!!
There are are other offroad vans around ,but for what its worth, those are the
two I got down to.Not cheap, expect to pay 50 /60 thousand for a 16ft with a
few extras, and there will always be something.
Good luck

I am currently doing a similar exercise and agree with your result but I also have Phoenix in the mix,is there a reason you have not considered them?

eefree,no reason, simply did not know about Phoenix at the time. Have since read about them and can imagine they are building at the highend
of the offroad vans. One interesting exercise is to pick up the used van
mags, and talk to the sellers, I always tell them that I'm not going to
buy a used van but interested in their type of van. All have been
quite happy to do so.

My Parents own a 16ft Phoenix Nomad.

Had it for about 5 years now.

They looked at a Bushtracker but the biggest they could tow with their GQ Patrol (Ford Mav actually) , was a 14ft "Basic" Bushtracker. These things are SERIOUSLY weighty.

We have just purchased a new offroad poptop and are very happy with it, did a lot of looking around first. Top ones in my opinion, Bushtracker, Phoneix, Kedron, Supreme and Trackmaster,( in no particular order )probably others that I dont know about as others are all trying for this market, be a bit carefull !!!!
Offroad caravans weigh a lot heavier than standard vans so all the xtra goodies you put in or on mean xrtra weight again, get an estimate of weight from the manufacturer and see if it is within your vehicles capabilities

Hi Chris..

I'm not aware of any independent comparisons. I purchased a "Kimberley" pop top from Trackmaster in February this year. I spoke with people who already owned Trakmasters to see if they were happy with their purchase and also asked if they thought about how they could be improved. I'm extremely happy wiyth my purchase however have only taken it to Fraser Island at this stage. Big trip is planned for next year.

Regards
Ross
