Hi Everyone,
Have just completed a trip from the Hunter Valley to "The Cape" 2004 as a single vehicle party
camping with swags, and what a great trip it was (no problems) so am excited about planning my next adventure to The
Kimberley.
Would appreciate some feed back about The
Kimberley on the points listed below:
Is a caravan an option on the
Gibb River Road or is the road more suited for swags and tent?
What is the term "Jump-Up" on the Hema map?
Where are the better
camping spots in the
Kimberley region?
Am also thinking of doing The
Kimberley as a single vehicle party? What are your thoughts.
Happy travelling

Goodaye Redsox,
We did the Gibb in June this year as a single party. Nothing to it! It would depend on the time of year of course. There is plenty of traffic anyway. The 'Jump ups' were just a steep
hill. I am not sure why they call them that, but there was nothing to them! I saw a few caravan's along the way, but I would only take and extremely sturdy offroad one if I was you. We were quite fortunate to find the road in very good condition. It is a fantastic trip. We did
El Questro,
Manning Gorge,
Bell Gorge,
Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. I am told
Mitchell Falls is fantastic but the road is a bit rough. If you get to
Broome, make sure you go to
Cape Leveque and Middle
Lagoon. Absolutely sensational if you like
the beach.
All in all, I would say the
Kimberley region is nothing short of fantastic.
Enjoy!!
regards
Andrew

I think the the term "jump - up" on maps was for a very steep rise on the ground that would be an obstacle to a normal car. The main roads are so much better now that you don't make a fuss about a
jump up any more.
Different matter altogether when on very minor tracks. We have had to build a ramp with dirt and rocks etc. to traverse.

If you do the Gibb RR do it as soon as you can cross the Pentecost, normally mid to late April to mid MAy,depending on weather.
The majority of the creeks will have
water in them, for a wash. Few vehicles on the road and
camping spots galore as the tourist season won't start for a month or 2. We were there 3 years ago and only saw 8 to 10 vehicles over a 10 day period.......great.
It is a bit hot during the day but nights are cool because of the altitude.

I think a "jump up" refers to the rise in the level of the country side, ie travelling at say 500m elevation come to the
jump up and at the top you are now travelling at 550m elevation. The down part maybe many ks away. Or its the
jump up when you are travelling in the opposite direction.
