KIM
Hi guys
Recently had a set of 265/70-R17 Cooper ST's fitted to a 120 Prado. The process leading up to my final decision would have to be the biggest amount of Bull Tish I have experienced for some time.
1. The majority of tyre dealer (employees) don't have a clue what they are talking about and tend to push a brand(s) that are either totally unsuitable, or are profit motivated.
2. There appears to be a lot of dealers putting BFG's down since Michelin have taken over the company. They are stating different countries of manufacture (per batch), balancing problems etc etc.
3. Prices for the Coopers varied by as much as $40/tyre.
4. I checked the pressures in the new tyres once at home. One side 45PSI, 40PSI the other side 31PSI, 35PSI.
This is not meant to be a "knocking" tyre dealer post, just my recent experience.
Cheers
Kim

Hey Kim
I am about to change tyres, 99% on coopers St's 265/75/16, just wondering what swayed you on the coopers? BFG's have had a bad rap from people i have spoken to, duellers are not fun in the wet and I wouldn't put Goodyears back on, so about to go with Coopers... your experience would help
thanks

Crazie,
Another tyre debate, my 2 cents worth, I'm a great believer in BFG's, we had a presentation from someone recently selling the Maxxis brand, the guys couldn't say a good word about BFG's. Just had a group back from an extended trip they wouldn't touch Coopers ever again, others on this
forum love them, good on them they've had good experiences.
I've done extended trips on my BFG's A/T's without a problem, I stick with the ones out of the US they seem to be better, I try to run the right pressures and try as best as I can to look after them, I've not had a bad experience to date, my BFG muddies on my Rangie give me thebleeps, always letting mud between the rim and the tyre then they go down slowly a week or so later, I don't think this is a tyre problem, I'm not really blaming them anyway.
We'll never resolve this but I would treat the Cooper warranty with care, reading the fine print is very important. I hope you have long and reliable service from whatever you decide to buy.

Hey Martyn
Thanks for the feedback, how can you tell if the BFG's are from the US. I have heard good and bad for coopers and BFG's, but its hard to know what to go with, flip a coin. cheers Ad

Crazie,
It's moulded into the sidewall, you have to look fairly hard but it's there.

"duellers are not fun in the wet "
What/how were you driving?
Without comparing +'s and -'s between tyre brands, the Bridgestone Duellers on my Jack (694's) are very stable in the wet.
Maybe your tyre pressures were incorrect?
For the price, they appear to do everything I need out of a tyre.
I cannot comment on wear though, only done 15k on them so far.

Hi Sand Man
Sorry, i was running desert duellers (31 x 10.5) on my nissan patrol, tyre pressure was all good, personal opinion, i didn't like them in the wet. Totally agree that the new dueller 694 is a great tyre and with the donut technology, I am sure they are fantastic in the wet , unfortunately I am after something my agressive this time, but did look at the 694's.cheers mate. does it really mater were there made ? Now I dont mind the maxxis , have run them on cars and was very happy . But to compare them to BFG's is bloody ridiculous. i love my BGF muds , still trying to get them stuck.

I've got a set of Maxxis Buckshot Muddies and they went everywhere BFG's have gone without a problem. This was on a FJ55 completely open diffs etc, so I would compare them to BFG's and others. JMHO.
As stated by others to each his own and it all depends on what people want out of a tyre.

Chapel st ? Lygon st ? were these some of the
places ? Been evrywere . were is everywere ? when we compare something lets compare apples with apples . We will give worst case senario . Otherwise any product you get is good enough . A piece of PVC also make a awsom bullbar and goes anywere my arb bar goes.
Well till I really need it anyway.

Hi Kim, just put Cooper ST's on my cruiser. Like you know whats, everone has an opinion. I could not decide as the dealers push there own barrow. Some even told me incorrect sizes for my rims etc. It is hard to understand why they seem to know so little when they deal in this stuff all day every day.
Self interest is hard to put aside I guess.
I will let you know wha t they are like, but i can tell you where I will be sticking them if they are no good.
Cheers Skinny

I have Cooper STs on one vehicle, and BFG ATs on the other. I reckon the Coopers look better but they are certainly wearing faster. After 20,000 km they look about half worn. The BFGs have done a lot more (about 40 k), on a bigger vehicle, and look about the same. As far as wet grip goes they are both OK, but not a patch on the Michelins (which are more a bitumen tyre).
Remember when you go to tyre store you are not paying for independent professional advice - mostly you get the cheapest price you can. So you can hardly blame the dealers for pushing their own merchandise. That doesn't excuse crap workmanship (unevenly inflated tyres) though.

Hi people
just a note on the Coopers ST watch out on how much weight you carry air pressure and speed at witch you travel. I was looking after a fleet of land cruisers
and found the coopers where splitting, tread separation and disintegrating at just under 1/4 treed left. look for
wheels needing to be balanced this is the tyre loosing its shape, splitting between the tread pattern any exposed wire.
The ST are speed rated to 138kms and only have a 2 ply side wall and got about 40000 to 60000 KMs out of a set.
personally I like the BFGs A/T but I can not comment on the new BFGs. The company went for Dunlop's due to price.

Hi, Just a coment and matbe you can help or readers. I have just worn out a set of BFG 265/75 R16 on aq 94 cruiser wagon with lots of long runs around Qld, I have done aprox 120,000klms and air press and rotation has been neglected at times, like one rotation in last two years. The last 6 months the balance and steering have been a little off, but I guess they where worn out, now one has gone dumpling.
Yesterday I noticed a poswt with someone looking to sell some 275/70 R16 from the
Gold Coast, I would like to get in touch with this person, I need to replace
mine now, and BFG are hard to find, Maybe I will have to look at another brand.
