Dad's 60th next week and we are contemplating a spit as you do, but I am thinking of buying one as it would get used a few times a year, I am over hiring them and pretty keen on having one when we
camp on the Murray over summer. If I was capable I would like to build one with a windscreen wiper motor but I'm not handy with a welder so building one is not really an option. Having done a google and yellow pages search I only found one place in Melb. that makes them so far, surely there are more.
Can anyone assist with suggestions regarding:
- Where you can get them in Melb?
- Any other advice hints/suggestions
- If I get one that runs on 240v, when camping how do I go with an inverter running it over 4 hrs? i.e. Do I just obtain amp. draw details from manufacturer and compare with amp hours on second battery as I did with my Engel.
I am keen on a spit as opposed to the
camp oven, weber, cobb things

Well when in need of a spit . Look for your neerest Greek lol. Now , forget heat bead, and make sure you ONLY
cook , with maly root . You can get it from Oakleigh market , or Nick's
farm in old dandinong rd . The 12 volt wiper motor is the best , but must be mounted proberly , and a proper fitting made by a fitter and turner , or your waisting your time, If you can find a D cell battery one , make sure you can buy yourself a voltage reducer from 12 volts down to what the motor runs . Then you can run wires to your car battery .
Best of luck

Truckster & others, thanks for your comments,
I went to BBQ's galore on friday night and found:
pull apart stainless rod and bracket thing to hold the meat on and brackets designed to bolt on top of existing gas BBQ $30
Battery powered motor $30 (or 240v $50)
They also have for $60 a rectangle portable BBQ with removable legs which I think I will be able to bolt the brackets on to, so for a bit over $100 I think I can get a pretty good portable spit. Great for camping over summer but I don't think it will be big enough to
cook say 10kg for parties at
home.
These $30 battery motors look very er............. Taiwanese and I was wondering how strong & reliable they are.
How heavy a piece of meat can you put on one of these battery powered spits?
