I have just got back from the Cape, part of the trip was to Chilli Beach where we noticed that there is a proposed road closure of the roads around the beach. The description was poor and no indication of who wanted the closure. The date for comments closed the next day, so there wasn't much we could do. Next year you may need to check if you can still go there - a beautiful spot.

Hi Graham,

Also got back from our Cape trip a couple of weeks ago. We spent 5 days at Chili Beach and we agree a very beautiful place.

We saw the notice about road closures and after looking closely at the plan we didn't think it affected the roads that the tourists use - it appeared to be other areas nearby. Hope so.

We had 5 weeks at the Cape & the holiday was our best yet.

Hi Graham & Willy

Thanks for the info, it's always handy to have current info.

We went to Chilli Beach (and cape) 2 years ago and did the cape again this year but couldn't fit a quick trip to Chilli Beach in this time.
We are hoping to get up that way next year and hopefully do the trek into Chilli Beach again.
Was the old hand pump still there with the brown bore water?

Thanks for your reply in advance.

Thanks

I was at Chilli beach for 3 days around 18-8-04 and the Hand pump was out of service. Parks people were there at the time putting up pine posts around the campsites! etc.
I also saw the signs and also thought road closures affected areas not used by us visitors.
cheers

Hi Graham,

We spent three nights at Chilli Beach in July last year. Thought the place was lovely, but it blew around 35 knots the whole time we were there. A bit scary with all the coconut trees around! Were we just unlucky, or was it breezy while you were there too? We are planning another trip up that way in the future and would go back if the weather was kinder.

Did you get down to Portland Roads and try some of the seafood straight off the trawlers?

Hi Robyn, Yes we went to Portland Roads but the tide was out and I was very dissapointed with it. i really couldn't see why you would want to live there, it looked quite depressing.
We had reallatively calm winds at Chilli beach - we only epent two nights there but I would have liked to have spent a few more days to relax there. We didn't catch any fish but had a good feed of oysters from the rocks on the island, we camped just south of the well. there was a toilet block there and further down. i hope the roads will not be closed and it is probably right that it is other roads that are affected as the NPWS have spent a lot of money on the toilet blocks and camp sites. It is worth going out on the Frenchmans Road but you must be with another vehicle and capable 4wds. The scenery along this road is spectacular and the Pascoe is best crossed east to west.
It is an interesting occurance at sunset and sunrise when thousands of little birds gather to roost on the island. They congregate obove the island and fly from all parts of the mainland appearing to fly around and around until the last one has joined the throng and then suddenly land. I didn't get up early enough to see them take off - but it may have been worth it.
Anyway a beautiful spot.

Graham
