Haven't been online for a while and good to see that everything has returned to normal, and the forum is pumping!

We set out on our year long trip on New Years Day, and I'm counting the days!

With so many things to plan, I was hoping to get some words from the wise.

We leave syd. 01/01/05, and head sth to Tassie via wilsons prom. and various other sites in Vic. Then head to S.A. and see Kangaroo Isl. among other things. Then we head straight up the middle via the rock on our way to the tip. Then around the Gulf to Nth. W.A. and slowly down to Perth via the best surf in Oz (some say the world).

We'd like to start cape york just after the grader round mid may, so was hoping to leave S.A. early April.

So my question is, Would leaving S.A. then, equate to major discomfort while going through the middle? Also is the Border Track one way, go Sth. Only?

Also, any ideas on the easiest way from the Alice to either the east coast or the cape?

Thanks in advance peeps!

Mate, the "easiest" way from Alice to the east is up to Three Ways then across the Barkly Highway to Mt Isa etc. Pretty boring run though, including one stretch of 75K dead straight bitumen.
Two more interesting and fairly good runs are either the Plenty Highway to Boulia then on to Winton etc, or the Sandover which comes out around Camoweal, then on to the Isa. Both the Sandover and the Plenty are dirt roads but usually in pretty good nick. Just check with the locals first if there's been a bit of rain. A good wet season will make both these roads impassable for weeks/months.
Enjoy your trip, lucky bugger......

Border track is one way, North to south

No major discomfort in April, 'cept for the %^*&$#^%87*#!! flies

Try avoiding the bitumen & use the Sandover highway to Cammoweal. Excellent run, no traffic issues

Cheers

Hey Eric,

Yeah, I figure my Truck will get a beating enough on its journey. Just gotta hope the wet season doesn't decide to end late!

The pictue is from Shark Islands "little" brother. A place called Winkies(Winkipop) on the Nthn Beaches. Around from Fairy Bower on Manly head.

Cheers.

Hi Eric,
Your query about Shark Island got me curious so I have just been to the CYC site and have had one nagging question answered for me.....how come i sometimes see a Cape York Connection 4wd (80 Series???) getting around engadine/heathcote area?

Obviously you are passing thru on the way to or from Wollongong.
